Early life: Famous roots

The actress was raised in her birthplace alongside her sister, fellow actress Sara, by Rosalind Goethals, a teacher single mother; her estranged father is Michael Goethals. She carries the namesake of her paternal great-great-grandfather – famed George Washington Goethals, the US army general and civil engineer whom Goethals Bridge in New York is named after, thanks to being the chief engineer of the Panama Canal, which connects the Atlantic with the Pacific Ocean, and divides North from South America. Her childhood interests were influenced by family friend and actress Jeanie Hackett, who took her to a few auditions. She attended Stuyvesant High School, where she spent four years, and as a cheerleader, matriculating in 1995. Goethals subsequently enrolled into the private liberal Vassar College, in Poughkeepsie, New York, graduating from there with a Bachelor’s degree in French in 1999.

Career: Rushing to the stage

Angela snagged her first professional performance at age nine, as an understudy to actress and producer Sarah Michelle Gellar, in the off-Broadway play by Horton Foote entitled “The Widow Claire.” In 1988 her onscreen debut was as Dawn Black in “Rocket Gibraltar”, as well as the role of Pam Wolfe in “Heartbreak Hotel” later that year. Her first performance in a TV series was realized as Amber Sweeny in an episode of “The Equalizer” in 1989, while Goethals got her big break in 1990, landing the part of Linnie, starring Macaulay Culkin and Joe Pesci, in the world-renowned family comedy by Chris Columbus entitled “Home Alone” – the highest-grossing live-action comedy film until 2011, with two Oscar nominations and 11 awards.

She was promptly cast in her first starring role, as Angela Doolan in 22 episodes of “Phenom” (1993) which, coupled with schoolwork at merely 14 years old, meant she couldn’t reprise Linnie in “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” (1992) – a title that evidently had much more success. She took a break to focus on her studies after “Phenom” concluded in 1994, appearing two years later as Kathy Sanders in “Jerry Maguire”, her only role for the next four years.

Angela’s 2000’s

Angela started the 2000’s with the recurring part of Sara in an episode of “Madigan Men”, moving into 2001 as Elli in “Storytelling.” In 2002 she was seen as Polly in “Porn ‘n Chicken”, as well as three other roles, most importantly Cheryl Larsen in 15 episodes of “Do Over”, through 2003, after which she landed the character of Katie Shaw in seven episodes of “The Brotherhood of Poland, New Hampshire”.

Another great success came for Goethals in 2004, when she appeared alongside as Gwen in James L. Brooks’ comedy romance drama entitled “Spanglish”, starring Adam Sandler. With two other roles under her belt that year, in 2005 Angela appeared in four titles, playing recurring characters in  the popular “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and “Grey’s Anatomy”, as well as Maya Driscoll in five episodes of “24.” In 2006 she showed up as Deborah – Quentin’s Wife in an episode of “Crossing Jordan”, and more importantly in the lead female role of Taylor Gentry in the comedy horror entitled “Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.” In 2007 she was Officer Ellen Belott in an episode of “Boston Legal”, and was Patty York two years later in an episode of “Life.”

The 2010’s

Angela slowed down with work as 2010 rolled around, with single episode-appearances as Maura Scott in the famous “Law & Order”, and Ginnie in “Royal Pains.” She stayed offscreen until 2015, when “Home Alone: Deleted Scenes” came out as a short video, featuring Goethals in her childhood. In 2017, she played Kathleen in “Long Day’s Journey Into Night: Live”, and a year later Mona in the short film entitled “P.T.A-Holes.” She hasn’t made any other appearances since, although the follow-up film of “Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon” will feature her as Taylor Gentry again, this time in the lead role. The film isn’t in production yet, but will mark her 37th acting credit.

Goethals’ other works

The actress has been alternating between stage and cameras since the start, appearing in popular theater titles such as ”Hazelwood Jr. High” (1998), “Third” (2008), “Be Aggressive” and “The Good Times are Killing Me.” She’s also narrated two audio books – “In the Shadow of Blackbirds” (2013) by Cat Winters, and “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” by Ann Brasheres.

When not involved in a Hollywood project, Angela is most frequently either realizing a theater project, or taking care of her family. As of mid-2022 it looks like she’s busy being center-stage as a mother to her son, while the aforementioned lead role is also being prepared.
