David went to 1A Petrolia High School, where he started playing football, helping the team to win the Texas 1A State Championship. He transferred to S. H. Rider High School and continued by becoming part of the Rider Raiders high school football team. David proved to be a valuable asset as he became team captain in his senior year and posted great numbers, including 18 touchdowns. He also caught 91 passes for 1,641 receiving yards.
After showing his skills at high school level, young David received an athletic scholarship from the University of Florida in Gainesville,and continued to play football being coached by Urban Meyer. During his college career, David was the SEC Champion in 2006 and 2008, and the BCS National Champion in 2007 and 2009.
