Auston wasn’t initially interested in the sport, but found the machine that cleaned the ice during intermissions fascinating. He then started playing hockey with the Arizona Bobcats minor hockey program, but also played baseball although he apparently didn’t like the pace of the game. In 2012, Matthews was drafted by the Everett Silvertips as the 57th overall pick as a part of the WHL Bantam Draft, but instead opted to play for the US National Team Development Program, joining the United States Hockey League (USHL). He played for the US National U17 Team, and his performance gained the attention of various NHL scouts. During his second season, he finished first in the league for scoring, breaking the record of 102 set by Patrick Kane in 2005, and then won the Bob Johnson Award for excellence in international competition, plus being named the 2015 Most Valuable Player during the World U18 Championships. Before finding a spot with the NHL, he signed a one year contract to play for the ZSC Lions in Switzerland, living there with his mom. He also took online courses from the University of Nebraska Omaha, meantime helping the team win the Swiss Cup final, and himself the NLA Rising Star Award. However, they got swept in the first round by the eventual league champions CS Bern.

Matthews then joined the 2016 NHL Draft, and was selected as the first overall pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He made his debut the same year, scoring four goals in his debut making him the first in NHL history to do so. His jersey would quickly become the highest selling in the league, and his net worth increased significantly. He broke the Leafs record for most goals scored in a season by a rookie, and only the fourth teenager to notch 40 goals in a season. The Leafs would go on to win four straight playoff games, and he was given the Calder Memorial Trophy, having also become the NHL player to have the most consecutive games with a shot on goal with 103.

For his personal life, nothing is known about any of Auston’s romantic relationships. He mentioned that his favorite athlete growing up was Kobe Bryant, and his favorite film is “The Mighty Ducks”.
