Who is Barry Keoghan?

Barry Keoghan is an Irish award-winning actor best known to the world as Martin in the film “The Killing of a Secret Deer” (2017), and as George in the film “Dunkirk” (2017), in addition to a number of other roles that he has secured so far in his career.

Barry Keoghan Biography: Age, Ethnicity, Childhood, and Education

Barry Keoghan was born on 18 October 1992, in Summerhill, Dublin, Ireland. Barry had a rather tough childhood; his biological mother, Lyra Rae Keoghan died of a heroin overdose when he was just 12 years old, after which, he and his brother Eric spent time in foster care, living with 13 different families before the boys went to live with their maternal grandmother and aunt. Unfortunately, there is no information about his father.

While in high school he became interested in acting, and appeared in a few school plays, but the teacher banned him from the drama club due to his bad behavior. However, his love for acting prevailed, and he later studied acting at The Factory, a local Dublin school.

Career Beginnings

Barry saw an advertisement for “Between the Canals” (2011) and went to an audition.


After displaying his talents, Barry was selected for the minor role of Aido, sharing the set with Peter Coonan and other stars. The same year, he was Dave Donoghue in the soap opera “Fair City”, while in 2012 he starred in the thriller film “Stalker”, directed by Mark O’Connor, teaming up again with Coonan, and the dynamic duo was joined by John Connors. He worked with O’Connor and Coonan again the same year, this time on the film “King of the Travellers”.

He continued his career with the role of Wayne in the award-winning TV crime-drama series “Love/Hate” (2013), and the same year co-starred in the drama film “Stay”, alongside Aidan Quinn, Taylor Schilling and Gina Moxley.

He next had a support role in the award-winning action crime-drama film “’71” in 2014, which starred Jack O’Connell, Sam Reid and Sean Harris, then in 2015 he starred in the thriller-drama film “Norfolk”, next to Denis Menochet and Goda Letkauskaite, and later that year he was Ken in the award-winning thriller film “Traders”.

Rise to Prominence

Barry’s career was heading in the right direction, and he started the next year with the lead role in the romantic drama film “Mammal”, and appeared in the film “Trespass Against Us”, with Michael Fassbender, Brendan Gleeson and Lyndsey Marshal as the main stars of the film.


2017 was the breakthrough year for the young actor – first he portrayed Pavel in Konstantin Bojanov’s award-winning drama film “Light Thereafter”, then was selected for the role of Martin, an American teenager plotting revenge on a drunken surgeon, in the horror mystery-drama film “The Killing of a Sacred Deer”, which won him several awards, including the Irish Film and Television Award in the category for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Moreover, he was selected to play George in the eponymous historical war-drama film “Dunkirk”, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, and co-starring Fiona Whitehead and Mark Rylance. The role of George won him the Dublin Film Critics Circle Award in the category for Breakthrough Artist, while the film itself won numerous awards, including three Academy Awards.

The next year was even more successful for the young star; he was selected as the lead star in the biopic about four college students who planned a heist of the university library to steal the rare first edition of the John James Audubon’s picture book “Birds of America”, entitled “American Animals”; Barry’s co-stars in this film were Evan Peters, Blake Jenner, and Jared Abrahamson. In 2019 he joined the main cast of HBO’s mini-series “Chernobyl” as Pavel, and the same year starred in the crime-drama film “Calm with Horses”, which earned him the BAFTA Award nomination in the category for Best Supporting Actor.

Recently, Barry appeared in the fantasy adventure-drama film “The Green Knight”, and appeared in the fantasy action-adventure film “Eternals”, both in 2021.


He has several upcoming projects on which he’s working, including a new take on the popular superhero “Batman”, in which he will portray Officer Stanley Merkel, while Bruce Wayne/Batman was given to “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson. Moreover, he is set to star alongside such acting greats as Collin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in the drama film “The Banshees of Inisherin”, and will star in the TV mini-series “Masters of the Air”.

Barry was in a long-term relationship with Shona Guerin, a film producer, and they lived in Los Angeles together before breaking up in 2020.

Barry has moved on and recently introduced his new girlfriend, Alyson Sandro to the public as they appeared at the gala event together.
