Belinda was born into a large family, the eldest of seven children. When she was five years old, her father abandoned the family and when her mother re-married, she didn’t have a close relationship with her stepfather. She attended Newbury Park High School, and then left home when she turned 19 years old.

Belinda started to pursue a career in music and became part of the punk rock band the Germs as their drummer. She used the name Dottie Danger, and also did back-up vocals for Black Randy and the Metrosquad. After leaving the Germs, she co-founded the Misfits who would later become known as the Go-Go’s, with original band members including Jane Wiedlin, Elissa Bello, and Margot Olavarria. After Bello and Olavarria left the group, Charlotte Caffey joined the band along with Kathy Valentine and Gina Schock. They became very popular during the 1980s and were the first all-female band to write their own music, achieving a number one album entitled “Beauty and the Beat”. Some of their hit songs included “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat”. They would go on and record two more albums entitled “Vacation” and “Head over Heels”. In 1984, Carlisle would try her hand at acting in the film “Swing Shift” which starred Kurt Russel, and a year later the Go-Go’s would disband, leading Belinda into a solo career.

Carlisle released her first self-titled album in 1986, and it would prove to be very popular in Canada and the US. Some of the songs she released include “I Feel the Magic”, “Since You’ve Been Gone”, and “Mad About You”, and her songs would be featured in movies such as “Mannequin”, “Burglar”, and “Out of Bounds”. In 1987 she released “Heaven on Earth” which was the marking of a change in her musical style. She would get nominated for several awards, and then released the hit song “Heaven Is a Place on Earth”, which would become the number one song in several countries, and she would go on to release the song “I Get Weak”. She went on a tour to promote the album and in 1989 released the platinum certified “Runaway Horses”, which included the songs “Summer Rain” and “Whatever it Takes” which featured Bryan Adams. A year later, the Go-Gos would reunite to support their compilation album “Greatest”.

Belinda would continue her solo career in the 1990s, releasing “Live Your Life Be Free” and “The Best of Belinda, Volume 1”. In 1993, she released “Real” with most of the songs in the album written by her. The following year the Go-Go’s toured once more for “Return to the Valley of The Go-Go’s”, and Carlisle would start working on her sixth solo album “A Woman and a Man”, which revitalized her career, especially in Europe. In 1999, she released a greatest hits album entitled “A Place on Earth: The Greatest Hits” and would then start working on new material for the Go-Go’s which became “God Bless the Go-Go’s”. Her latest project was 2007’s “Voila” which marked her first album in more than 10 years. She continues making regular appearances on television, and also continues to tour.

For her personal life, Carlisle married film producer Morgan Mason in 1986; they have a son, and their family currently resides in both France and the US.
