He grew up in Mount Vernon, New York State and was raised solely by his mother Janice Combs (nee Smalls) who was a teacher and model, as his father Melvin Combs was shot dead in his car aged 33, when Diddy was only two; Melvin served in the US Air Force, but was also associated with American drug dealer Frank Lucas. Diddy studied at Mount Saint Michael Academy and was mostly into playing football during his time there, winning a division title with his team in 1986. He matriculated in 1987, and then enrolled at Howard University, however, Diddy quit after his second year wanting to pursue rap; he returned to college in 2014, and was presented with an Honorary Degree in humanities.

Diddy’s journey into the music industry began in the first half of the 1990s when he worked as an intern at Uptown Records. His amazing skills and rich vocabulary quickly propelled him into the role of a talent director, where he played an important role in the success of numerous artists, including Jodeci; Diddy’s quick rise to fame set the foundation for the launch of his own record label only a year or two later.

In 1997, Diddy released his debut studio album “No Way Out”; driven by the success of singles
“Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” and “I’ll Be Missing You”, the album topped the Billboard 200 chart and received widespread critical acclaim. The song “I’ll Be Missing You” was a tribute to his late friend and artist Notorious B.I.G, and it won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

Following the success of “No Way Out”, Diddy continued to work on new music and in 1999 released his second album “Forever”; although it didn’t achieve the same level of commercial success as its predecessor, it featured hit songs such as “Hate Me Now” with Nas and “Satisfy You” with R. Kelly.

In 2001, Diddy rebranded himself as P. Diddy (from Puff Daddy) and released his new album “The Saga Continues…” with the collaborative group Diddy-Dirty Money. This marked a departure from his previous solo work, as the album featured a more collaborative and experimental approach; the lead single “Bad Boy for Life” became a huge hit, and the album’s diverse sound attracted audiences of various ages.

Diddy went on to venture outside of music, including into fashion with the launch of his clothing line Sean John; the brand quickly gained recognition for its urban-inspired style and thanks to Diddy’s success in music easily found customers in the entertainment industry.

In 2006, Diddy returned to his solo career with the release of his new album “Press Play”; it featured many famous guest artists, such as Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige and Nas.

In the subsequent years, Diddy continued to make waves in the music industry, collaborating with artists working in various genres; his influence extended beyond his own discography as he became a mentor and producer for emerging talents.

Diddy’s musical career reached another high point with the release of his 2010 album “Last Train to Paris”, credited to Diddy-Dirty Money. The album blended elements of R&B, hip-hop and electronic music, and received critical acclaim for its innovative sound; songs such as “Coming Home” and “Hello Good Morning” showcased Diddy’s ability to adapt to evolving musical trends while maintaining his signature style.

In 2015, Diddy released the mixtape “MMM” (Money Making Mitch) to promote his highly anticipated album “No Way Out 2”, which he revealed would be his final as he would then retire from music and focus on acting. It turned out Diddy wasn’t able to stay away from music and he went on to tour all around the USA, releasing his documentary movie “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop: A Bad Boy Story” on 23 June 2017, featuring him touring and performing.

Most recently, on 15 September 2023, Diddy released his new studio album “The Love Album: Off the Grid”.

His first son was born in 1993, with his mother being American stylist and fashion designer Misa Hylton. It was in 1994 that Diddy began dating Kim Porter, and he adopted her son Quincy from her former relationship with American singer-songwriter and rapper Al B. Sure!, Diddy’s rival. He also has a daughter born to Sarah Chapman in 2006, and he took legal responsibility of her in the following year.
