Career as a writer and performance artist
George became active in the world of underground comix in the early ‘70s, at the height of their popularity. These works differ from typical comic books, in that they depict content forbidden by the mainstream media, and were usually small press or self-published. George’s most notable titles in the genre were “Forbidden Knowledge”, “Cocaine Comix” and “Greaser Comics”, on which he collaborated with other comix artists such as Pete vin Sholly and Rich Chidlaw. Furthermore, he also ran his own self-published imprint, known as Half-Ass Press, and worked as a distributor all through ‘70s and ‘80s, supplying West Coast retailers with independent comic books.
George later started dabbling in performance arts, mainly in Los Angeles, California in the late ‘80s. According to his colleague Harvey Pekar, George was known for his 1988 acts, which he described as ‘a light show using brine shrimp and worms. I’d hit ’em with cold water and they’d move around and I’d project ’em on a wall magnified. It blew people’s minds.’
As of 2008, George’s been working as a film producer, mainly short movies and documentaries. One of his first works as a producer was on the documentary/reality TV series, “Greensburg”, which aired from 2008 through 2010, depicting the reconstruction of an American town into a futuristic, sustainable utopia. However, George and Irmeling remained on good terms, and even agreed to live next door to each other, so that their son would still be close to his father.
