Who is George DiCaprio?

George Paul DiCaprio was born in New York City USA, on 2 October 1943 – his zodiac sign is Libra, and he holds American nationality. He’s a writer, editor, publisher, film producer, and former performance artist, known for his work in the underground comix scene, and collaborations with artists such as Timothy Leary and Laurie Anderson. Among the general public, George is perhaps known best for being the father of Oscar-winning Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

Early life and education

George is the son of George Leon DiCaprio and Olga Anne Jacobs, and has Italian ancestry from his father’s side, while his mother is of German descent; as he hasn’t spoken about any siblings, it’s believed that he’s an only child. He graduated from university in 1972, with a Bachelor’s degree in visual arts.

Career as a writer and performance artist

George became active in the world of underground comix in the early ‘70s, at the height of their popularity. These works differ from typical comic books, in that they depict content forbidden by the mainstream media, and were usually small press or self-published. George’s most notable titles in the genre were “Forbidden Knowledge”, “Cocaine Comix” and “Greaser Comics”, on which he collaborated with other comix artists such as Pete vin Sholly and Rich Chidlaw. Furthermore, he also ran his own self-published imprint, known as Half-Ass Press, and worked as a distributor all through ‘70s and ‘80s, supplying West Coast retailers with independent comic books.

George later started dabbling in performance arts, mainly in Los Angeles, California in the late ‘80s. According to his colleague Harvey Pekar, George was known for his 1988 acts, which he described as ‘a light show using brine shrimp and worms. I’d hit ’em with cold water and they’d move around and I’d project ’em on a wall magnified. It blew people’s minds.’

As of 2008, George’s been working as a film producer, mainly short movies and documentaries. One of his first works as a producer was on the documentary/reality TV series, “Greensburg”, which aired from 2008 through 2010, depicting the reconstruction of an American town into a futuristic, sustainable utopia. Since then, he’s produced several short and feature-length documentaries focusing on the themes of global warming, sustainability and ecology, such as “Carbon” and “Green World Rising” in 2014, and “Pollinators Under Pressure” (2018).

His most recent project was the 2020 short film “The Purged: The Vanished Voters of Trump’s America” – a political documentary about the voters who had been unable to participate in the 2020 US Presidential Election, urging Americans to register to vote.

In 2021, George made his acting debut by splaying Mr. Jack in the coming-of-age comedy drama film “Licorice Pizza”, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and which starred Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman and Sean Penn. The movie is set in San Fernando Valley, California in 1973, and follows a love story of two teenagers; it won 58 awards and was nominated for three Oscars, for Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing, and Best Original Screenplay.

Personal life and marriage with Leonardo’s mother Irmelin Indenbirken

George met his future wife Irmelin Indenbirken, a German immigrant, during their college years.

The two married not long after graduation, and moved to Los Angeles where they had their only child, Leonardo DiCaprio, born in 1974. The couple divorced a year later, as George fell in love with another woman, while Leonardo stayed with his mother. However, George and Irmeling remained on good terms, and even agreed to live next door to each other, so that their son would still be close to his father.

It has been noted that George played a significant role in Leonardo’s early acting career. He would take him to auditions and write screen movie scripts for him, and later helped Leonardo land the role of Arthur Rimbaud in the 1995 movie “Total Eclipse”, replacing the late River Phoenix.

Age, height and net worth

George is 78 years old. He has long black hair and brown eyes, is 5ft 9ins (1.8m) tall and weighs around 165lbs (75kgs).

He’s an actor and producer, known best for his portrayal of complex and unconventional characters, such as Jordan Belfort in “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013), and Hugh Glass in “The Revenant” (2015).

Leonardo grew up with his mother, but still had a close relationship with his father George and half-brother Adam Farrar. Leonardo began acting at the age of five, making his debut in the children’s TV series “Romper Room”. He studied at John Marshall High School, but dropped out following his third year, as he wanted to focus on his acting career and improve his family’s financial situation.

He began by appearing in various TV shows in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, including “Roseanne” and “Growing Pains”, while he made his big screen debut in in the 1991 horror film “Critters 3”. Leonardo made his breakthrough two years later, starring opposite Robert De Niro in the biographical drama “This Boy’s Life”, based on the memoirs of author Tobias Wolf. His next movie role, in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”, earned him his first Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.

By the mid-1990s, Leonardo had earned the reputation of being one of the most talented young Hollywood actors, as he began appearing in more mainstream movies. One of his most notable roles from this period was perhaps in the Oscar-winning film “William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet” (1996), however, it was his portrayal of Jack Dawson in the 1997 romantic drama “Titanic” that launched him to international stardom.

Despite receiving several offers to appear in what became blockbusters in the following years, Leonardo continued to carefully choose his roles, focusing on more complex characters. Through his career, he’s collaborated with some of the most renowned movie directors, most notably Martin Scorsese, appearing in several of his films including “Gangs of New York” (2002), “The Aviator” (2004) and “Shutter Island” (2010). Leonardo also starred as real-life conman Frank Abangale Jr. opposite Tom Hanks, in Steven Spielberg’s “Catch Me If You Can” (2002).

In 2010, we saw Leonardo star as a corporate spy in Christopher Nolan’s science fiction thriller “Inception”, centered on a thief who steals corporate secrets through dream-sharing technology. The following years saw him star in a couple of other critically-acclaimed films, such as “Django Unchained” (2012), and in 2013 “The Great Gatsby” (2013) and “The Wolf of Wall Street”.

In 2016, Leonardo received his long-awaited Academy Award for Best Leading Actor, for his performance in “The Revenant” (2015). Following the win, he took a break from appearing on the big screen, making his comeback in 2019 in Quentin Tarantino’s action thriller “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood”. Two years later, we saw him play one of the lead characters in the dystopian comedy drama “Don’t Look Up”, starring with Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep.

Aside from acting, Leonardo’s dedicated his time to a number of causes, most notably concerning environmental issues. In 2000, he interviewed the US President at the time Bill Clinton, for a TV special about global warming. Four years later, he became a member of the boards of Global Green USA and Natural Resources Defence Council.

Furthermore, he’s produced two environmentalist documentaries: “The 11th Hour” (2007) and “Ice on Fire” (2019). However, in recent years, Leonardo has been criticized for frequently travelling in his private jet and owning a 318ft-long yacht – both of which produce a significant carbon footprint.

As for his personal life, Leonardo’s been reluctant to talk about his private matters in interviews, despite being the subject of widespread media attention. Through his career, he’s been romantically linked with many famous women, including fashion models Bar Refaeli and Gisele Bundshen, and was rumored to have been in a relationship with Barbadian singer Rihanna in 2018.

Leonardo is 47 years old. He has short brown hair and green eyes, is 6ft (1.83m) tall and weighs around 176lbs (80kgs).
