In 2009, she co-founded a non-profit organization called Kind Campaign, alongside her fellow from college, Molly Thompson. Both Lauren and Molly were affected by girl-against-girl bullying while they were middle school students, so at first they began with an idea for a documentary movie about this problem. They traveled all around the US visiting high schools and talking with girls about what they’d experienced.
In 2011, Lauren directed the short documentary movie “Finding Kind”, also starring alongside her mother, Debra Kelly, Molly Thompson and Tetia Stroud; in the documentary, Lauren spoke about her experience with bullying, when a group of girls made her feel so stressed and depressed that she was thinking about suicide. Her biggest support was her mother, and in her interview for Elle magazine, Lauren said:
‘When I was shooting the documentary in 2009, my mom and I made that transition from mother-daughter to friends. My co-founder Molly and I shot the film right after college and we brought both of our moms on the road with us. I did a two-month long road trip in a minivan with my mom when I had just turned 22. Ever since then, she’s been more a friend than a mom.’
The movie was awarded the Las Vegas International Film Festival Jury Prize, Best Educational Film.
In 2012, Lauren made an appearance as Doctor in the TV short movie “NCIS: Special Agent DiNozzo Visits Dr. Phil”, starring alongside Michael Weatherly and Phil McGraw, which was her last television appearance, except as a guest in some shows.
