He received permanent damage to his legs due to the dangers of the career, so he eventually left and focused on working as a tanner, although he stayed in rodeo longer than his father and brother who were also part of the rodeo circuit. He actually rode bulls for more than 18 years and broncos for more than 25. Most of his tanning skills have been self-taught, and soon his popularity would increase as well as his net worth, especially with the fur industry starting to wane, and the demand for tanners also starting to increase, and this would eventually lead him to become a part of “Mountain Men”.

The “Mountain Men” series follows a group of people who live off the land in remote areas of the US. Oar was introduced to the show through a friend, and then started being featured living near the Yaak River in north-western Montana. The series shows his struggles and efforts to prepare for a seven month winter season, along with his family and neighbors.
