Timothy was raised alongside his sister Julia and brothers Terry and Buck, by their mother Jean who was a secretary, and their father Roger who was a drama professor.
The children were encouraged by their father to pursue careers in the film industry, and Timothy started appearing in plays while attending East Lansing High School; he was interested in a couple of other activities during his four years there, including playing football and tennis.
