Who is Malcolm Washington?

Born on 10th April 1991, in Los Angeles, California, USA, Malcolm Washington is a writer, director, and former basketball player, also known for being the son of the legendary actor Denzel Washington. The cheerful Aries is 5ft 9ins (1.78m) tall and weighs 165lbs (75kgs), with unknown vital statistics.

Family & Upbringing

Malcolm’s paternal grandmother, Lennis, was born in Georgia but moved to Harlem, New York, in her childhood. Later in life, she met and married Denzel Hayes Washington Sr., an ordained Pentecostal minister, and former employee of the New York City Water Department who was frequently away from home.

Malcom’s father, Denzel Jr., was born on 28th December 1954 in Mount Vernon, New York State, and was cared for by his mother, who juggled parenthood and owning a beauty parlor. In 1968, she divorced Denzel Sr., and sent her son to Oakland Military Academia, a private preparatory school in New Windsor. According to the A-lister, it was a life-changing decision, seeing as his friends at the time ended up behind bars after getting caught up with the wrong crowd. Denzel himself kept on the straight and narrow, studying at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Florida, and graduating from Fordham University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama and Journalism in 1976.

At 18-years-old, the actor and director went to live with his father, but was kicked out for unexplained reasons. This led to a strained relationship between the two, and the actor would later confess in a soul-baring interview with Gentleman’s Quarterly Magazine that he didn’t shed a single tear at his father’s funeral. After a semester off, Denzel gained work experience at Camp Sloane YMCA in Lakeville, Connecticut, where a colleague suggested he try his hand at acting after his participation in a staff talent show. Inspired by his advice, Denzel studied acting at the Lincoln Center campus, and was cast in productions such as “Othello” and “The Emperor Jones”.

Following a brief period of time at the American Conservatory Theatre, he relocated to New York and began building the foundations of a long and fruitful career. He met his future wife Pauletta Pearson on the set of “Wilma”, the actor’s first TV project, and they went on to have four children between 1984 and 1991: John David, Katia, Olivia and Malcolm.

Malcolm matriculated from Windward School in 2009 and enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 2013 with a degree in film studies. A gifted basketball player, Malcolm joined his college team and led them to several victories, but later decided to focus on his passion in life: writing and producing.

An August 2014 article confirmed that Malcolm would be enrolling at the American Film Institute (AFI). Described as a legacy student and “high school and college basketball player with an eye on cinema”, Malcolm followed the footsteps of other industry offspring such as Bennett Lasseter, son of Pixar chief John Lasseter, and perfected his craft at the illustrious conservatory, graduating in 2016.

Malcolm enjoyed his first taste of the film industry in 2014, working as a production assistant for “Chef”, an award-winning comedy starring talents such as Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr.

After graduating from the AFI, Malcolm worked as a second assistant director on “Trouble Man”. 2017 was a more lucrative year for Denzel’s son, as he wrote and directed THE short “Benny Got Shot”, worked as assistant director on “The Last Bookstore”, produced “Summer of 17”, and snagged a role as Spike Lee’s assistant In eight episodes of “She’s Gotta Have It”, a Netflix series following the life of a young woman and her three love interests. Despite showing promise, the series was cancelled after two seasons, with Malcolm yet to embark on a new project since then.

Personal Life

Malcolm is virtually non-existent on social media, and shies away from giving interviews, which makes it hard to discover details about his interests and love life.

As of 2022, the director has yet to be romantically linked to anyone. The Washington family is very united and share a great relationship, with Denzel Sr. sharing occasional tidbits of his parenting style and how he and Pauletta brought up their four children while excelling in their demanding careers. In a rare interview with Oprah, the acting powerhouse explained: “Pauletta was the consistent one who made breakfast every day and took them to school. She taught them their prayers”, adding that when Malcolm and Olivia turned 16, he bought them second-hand vehicles so as not to spoil them. Denzel and Pauletta’s approach to parenthood seems to have worked, as today, their children are all leading successful and well-balanced lives.

The couple’s eldest son John David won a Saturn Award for Best Actor as recently as 2020 following his work in “Tenet”, the sci-fi thriller film directed by Christopher Nolan. Meanwhile, Katia’s latest project, “Sharp Stick”, has received positive views and may possibly be nominated at film festivals. Malcolm’s twin sister Olivia also pursued a career in Hollywood, and today boasts almost two dozen acting credits after debuting in 2013. Notable roles include in “The Butler”, and her portrayal of Amy Anders in “The Little Things”. Her latest projects include roles in “892” and the feel-good TV movie “A Holiday in Harlem”.

Net Worth

As of 2022, reliable sources confirm that Malcolm is worth $2 million, not a bad sum for someone who’s been on hiatus since 2017. So, how much is the rest of the Washington family worth? Denzel reportedly earns up to $60 million a year, and his net worth is reputedly an impressive $280 million thanks to his hard work and contributions to cinema, while his wife is said to be worth $11 million and can command up to $32,000 a month thanks to her talent and popularity. As for Malcolm’s siblings, John David is worth $8 million following roles in “Malcolm & Marie” and “Beckett”, while his younger sisters Katia and Olivia are worth $2 and $5 million respectively.
