Born as Caryn Elaine Johnson on 13 November 1955, in New York City USA, she was the daughter of Robert James Johnson Jr. and his wife, Emma. She had a brother, Clyde Johnson, who died in 2015.

Whoopi was raised by her single mother, living in the Chelsea-Elliot Houses, a public housing project in New York City.

She attended Washington Irving High School, but dropped out before matriculation.

She was addicted to heroin for some time, but successfully cleaned up and when she ultimately divorced in 1979 from Alvin, Whoopi moved to San Diego, California where she worked as a waitress, and later to Berkeley, California, where she held several odd jobs, such as bank teller, a cosmetologist in a mortuary, and a bricklayer.

Interested in theater, she joined the avant-garde theater troupe the Blake Street Hawkeyes.
