Briefly about Dennis Rodman

Born Dennis Keith Rodman under the zodiac sign of Taurus on 13 May 1961, in Trenton, New Jersey USA, he holds American nationality, and comes from a family of African American descent. He was raised by his mother Shirley, alongside his two sisters, Kim and Debra; their father, Philander Rodman Junior, left the family when Dennis was a young boy, but according to Dennis, from his father’s side he has 46 sisters and brothers. He wrote about his childhood in his autobiography “Bad As I Wanna Be” released in 1996, saying that after his father left, his mother worked up to four jobs to support him and his sisters. They lived in Oak Cliffs, Dallas, Texas.

Dennis attended South Oak Cliff High School, and upon matriculating in 1979, he worked at Dallas Forth Worth International Airport as a janitor. He wasn’t considered an athletic standout, and although he was listed in his high school’s basketball team, he was mostly benched.

However, Dennis suddenly grew from 5ft 11ins (1.8m) to 6ft 7ins (2.01m), so decided to try-out basketball again. He enrolled at the North Central Texas College (previously Cooke County College), in Gainesville, Texas, spending a semester there playing basketball, and averaging 13.3 rebounds and 17.6 points per game.

He transferred to Southern Oklahoma State University, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), where he was a three-time All-American. This helped him  gain an invite to a pre-draft camp, the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, where he caught the attention of the Detroit Pistons.

Dennis was drafted by this NBA team in 1986, and stayed with the Pistons until 1993. From 1993 through 1995, he played for the San Antonio Spurs, and was then traded to the Chicago Bulls. In 1999, Dennis joined the Los Angeles Lakers, but played only 23 games.

In 2000, he signed for the Dallas Mavericks, but because of his erratic behavior, he received six technical fouls, served a one-game suspension, and was ejected twice. One of his colleagues, Steve Nash, commented that Dennis was unmotivated, because ‘he actually never wanted to be a Maverick’.

In the early 2000s, Dennis took a break from basketball to focus on his acting career. He made his acting debut in the 1995 TV series “Double Rush”, and has over 30 acting credits to his name. Some of his notable roles were in the movies “The Comebacks”, “Simon Sez”, and “Double Team”, among others.

Dennis returned to basketball playing for the Long Beach Jam of the American Basketball Association (2003-2004), and then for the Mexican team, Fuerza Regia (2004). In the following 2004-2005 season, Dennis signed with the Orange County Crush team of the ABA, and the following season, he played for the Tijuana Dragons.

His return to the NBA never materialized; in January 2006, he signed for the United Kingdom basketball team Brighton Bears of the British Basketball League (BBL), which was a one-game experiment deal.

Speaking of his personal life, he was married twice before he married Michelle. His first wife was a non-celebrity, Annie Bakes – their daughter Alexis Caitlyn was born in 1988, the two married in September 1992 after five years of dating. but Annie filed for divorce 82 days after the marriage.

His second wife was model and actress Carmen Electra, whose real name is Tara Leigh Patrick. The two married on 14 November 1998, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Just nine days later, Dennis filed for an annulment, but they reconciled. Electra eventually filed for divorce in April 1999 – they didn’t have children together.

Dennis has been romantically linked to celebrities such as Madonna and Vivica Fox, but as of early 2023, it seems that he’s unattached.
