In one of his interviews, he said: ‘I was born into a world fertile for violence. With this as my legacy, my only choice is to search for peace.’ If you ever wondered about his life, let us tell you the naked truth about Pablo Escobar’s son.

Sebastian works as an architect and as he said, architecture saved his life. He designs public wellness centers, pools, and water therapy facilities for small towns in Argentina.

Early life and education

Born Juan Pablo Escobar Henao on 24 February 1977, in Medellin, Colombia, the first child of Pablo and his wife Maria Victoria Henao, he was raised alongside his sister Manuela, and during his childhood lived a life of luxury, interspersed with violence and fear.

When Pablo was killed in 1993, Juan, his mother, and his sister first fled to Mozambique and then traveled to Argentina on tourist visas, where they ultimately remained and became citizens. He changed his name to Sebastian Marroquin, since he needed a new identity after death threats.

He attended a local high school, and upon matriculating in 1995, enrolled at the Universidad de Palermo, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. Since then, Sebastian has been working as an architect in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“Sins of My Father”

Despite his father being one of the most dangerous drug dealers, the fact that he was Sebastian’s father is something that can’t be denied, and he felt that he had a moral responsibility for his father’s actions.

In 2009, the Netflix documentary “Sins of My Father” revealed his identity, and people asked why he decided to once again become the son of Pablo Escobar for the rest of the world, and Sebastian answered:

‘I wanted to share with young people what I have learned about the serious consequences of participating in the cruel game of drug dealing. I am just doing what I believe is right. If I can prevent even a single young person from entering that world, then it will be worth it.’

In the documentary, Sebastian apologized to the victims of his father – as he said, the hardest part of making the documentary was writing the letter of apology, and participating in the two subsequent meetings with the children of Galan and Lara, victims of Pablo Escobar. Luis Carlos Galan was a charismatic presidential candidate whose death was ordered by a kingpin in 1989, and Rodrigo Lara was a Colombian Justice Minister, who was killed in 1984.

Love life and wife

Sebastian has lived a peaceful life away from the media’s attention, and still hasn’t shared much about his life after he moved to Argentina. It is known that he’s married and that he has a son named Juan Emilio.

His wife’s name is Maria Angeles Sarmiento, and the two married in 2003. As of August 2022, the family of three lives together in Palermo Soho.

Pablo Escobar: My Father Which Art in Heaven

In 2014, Sebastian released a book under his birth name, a story of the most powerful drug lord in history narrated through the eyes of his son. According to him, he wanted to tell the story about his father, and to prove that he wasn’t a hero, and shouldn’t be a role model for anyone.

Sebastian wanted to show people the other side of being a druglord, and that although he loved his father, he was aware of the fact that he was an evil man.

‘I want those who read it, especially young people, to understand that these stories shouldn’t be repeated. The way my father’s story has been portrayed to the world encourages others to follow his example’- said Sebastian, adding that it creates a glamorous and inspirational product that many want to imitate, and want to be like Pablo Escobar.

He said that if someone who has read this book wants to become a drug lord as Pablo was, then Sebastian has done a poor job.

Net worth

Dubbed ‘The King of Cocaine’, Pablo Escobar at the time of his death was one of the wealthiest criminals in history, with a net worth estimated at $30 billion (equivalent to $70 billion as of 2022), and if you wondered what happened with all this money, it’s known that a large portion went to the Colombian government.

When Sebastian returned to Columbia for the premiere of the documentary “Sins of My Father“, he wasn’t allowed to enter the famous Hacienda Napoles, Escobar’s 20-square-kilometer estate, which was confiscated by the Colombian government, and now managed by the municipality of Puerto Triunfo. Sebastian spent most of his childhood at the estate, which included swimming pools and a zoo filled with millions of dollars worth of exotic animals.

Sebastian’s net worth has been estimated at $100 million, most of the income he has earned from his work as an architect and from selling his book.

Who was his father Pablo Escobar?

Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was born on 1 December 1949, in Rio Negro, Antioquia, Colombia, the third child of seven siblings. Heb was raised in the neighboring city of Medellin by his father who was a small farmer, and his mother who was a teacher.

Pablo left school before his 17th birthday, but later returned and upon matriculating, he enrolled at college, intending to become a politician and eventually president, but dropped out because of lack of money.

Reportedly, by the age of 20, Pablo was already a household name for stealing cars, and soon he become involved in violent crime, often kidnapping and holding people for ransom – his most famous kidnapping victim was Diego Echavarria, a businessman whose family paid a $50,000 ransom.

In 1976, he founded the Medellin Cartel, which distributed powder cocaine, and Pablo established the first smuggling routes through Colombia from Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador, and subsequently into the US. In the early ’80s, it was estimated that Pablo led monthly shipments of 70 to 80 tons of cocaine into the US from Colombia, and as a result, he became one of the richest people in the world.

From selling illegal cigarettes and fake lottery tickets, Pablo Escobar became a Colombian drug lord and narco-terrorist, who in the end, was killed a day after his 44th birthday, on 2 December 1993, by Colombian National Police.
