He had trouble finding friends due to constant moving, but he eventually matriculated from Arlington Heights High School, as the family settled in Fort Worth Texas, where his father was stationed at Carswell Air Force Base.

He started playing guitar at the age of 11, when he received an acoustic guitar from his grandmother, and by the time he was ready for college, John was already performing in several local clubs, under the name John Denver, after the capital of his favorite state in the USA, Colorado. After high school, he enrolled at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, and sang in a folk-music group the Alpine Trio.

He studied architecture, but left Texas Tech in 1963 to pursue a career in music.

He moved to Los Angeles and joined the Chad Mitchell Trio, in which he replaced the very same Chad Mitchell, the founder of the group. The trio changed its line-up several times and ultimately the name to Denver, Boise, and Johnson, consisting of John, David Boise and Michael Johnson. However, this only lasted for a few years before he started pursuing a solo career, and released his debut solo album “Rhymes & Reasons” for RCA Records.

His next two solo albums weren’t a commercial success, but “Poems, Prayers & Promises” released in 1971 proved to be a great success, as it achieved platinum status in the US.

Joh dominated the music scene in the ‘70s with such albums as “Back Home Again” (1974), which topped US Country and Billboard 200 chart and achieved triple platinum status, then “Windsong” (1975), his second No. 1 album, “Spirit” (1976), and continued with such popular releases as “I Want to Live” (1977), and “John Denver” (1979), then “Some Days Are Diamonds” (1981), and “Seasons of the Heart” (1982).

From the early 1980s, John’s popularity began declining, though he continued to make new music, ultimately reaching the number of 30 studio albums.

Some of his best-known songs include “Sunshine on My Shoulders” “Back Home Again”, “Thank God I’m a Country Boy”, “I’m Sorry”, and “Wild Montana Skies”, among many others.

John Denver died in a single-seater plane crash on 12 October 1997 as his light homebuilt aircraft, a Rutan Long-EZ crashed into Monterey Bay.

He was an avid pilot and had over 2,700 hours, but also had a prohibition to drive a car due to several drink driving arrests. Several controversies surfaced following the singer’s unexpected death, including the faulty fuel system of the plane.

His legacy has continued to live on, and he was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, as well as Songwriters Hall of Fame, among many other prestigious awards and honors.

According to sources, John Denver’s net worth at the time of his death was estimated at $60 million, earned through his successful career as a musician.

He was known for his philanthropic work too, including actively supporting nature conservation projects. Moreover, he had a keen interest in finding the solution for world hunger, and traveled to African countries several times during the ‘80s, working with African leaders.

He performed at the annual fundraising picnic for the Aspen Camp School for the Deaf, and performed at several fund-raising events for numerous charities.
