Bill went to Lafayette Elementary School, and later Alice Deal Junior High School. He enrolled at Sidwell Friends High School on a scholarship, from which he matriculated in 1973, then enrolled at Cornell University to study at its Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

During his time at the university, Bill developed an interest in astronomy as he started taking astronomy classes under Carl Sagan. He finished his studies with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 1977.

Before becoming a praised comedian and science TV host, Bill worked for the Boeing Corporation and Sundstrand Data Control near Seattle. He joined the airplane manufacturer as an engineer after graduation, until the mid- ‘80s, and during his time there he invented a hydraulic resonance suppressor tube, which is used on Boeing 747 airplanes.

He wanted to join NASA’s astronaut training program but was unsuccessful four times, after which he began pursuing comedy.

At first, he was impersonating Steve Martin in lookalike contests, winning one in 1978, but as he got more into science he wanted to combine science experiments and comedy, and began performing wacky science experiments during his shows.

After a brief meeting with Carl Sagan during his 10-year high school reunion, Bill received life-changing advice from Sagan who told him to focus on pure science and combine it with comedy for the show he wanted to start, and intended for children.

Soon Bill was working in the local comedy sketch show “Almost Live!”, and in the early ‘90s, he pitched his program for the children’s TV show “Bill Nye the Science Guy” to Seattle’s public television station KCTS-TV.

The show ran very successfully from 1993 until to 1998, launching Bill to international fame. He has won numerous awards for his show, including five Daytime Emmys, and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

To speak further of his career on television, Bill has appeared in the TV series “The Big Bang Theory”, and talked about his life and his dedication to science in the documentary “Bill Nye: Science Guy” (2017); the Netflix series “Bill Nye Saves the World” premiered in 2017.

He has featured in his friend and neighbor Ed Begley Jr’s reality TV show “Living with Ed”, and the two have started a friendly competition that they named ‘to see who could have the lowest carbon footprint’.

Bill is also an author, and has published over a dozen books in his career. His debut publication “Bill Nye the Science Guy’s Big Blast of Science” came out in 1993, and since then he’s published such works as “Bill Nye the Science Guy’s Great Big Dinosaur Dig” (2002), “Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation” (2014), then “Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World” (2015), and “Bill Nye’s Great Big World of Science” (2020), among many other titles.

Bill now resides in the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles, while he also has residences in New York City, and on Mercer Island near Seattle.

His home in California is solar-powered, and it often gives back extra power to the public grid, which is very important to him, and which he often brags about to his visitors.

Bill’s and Blair’s romance was rather turbulent. The two started dating in the early 2000s. and eventually married in a ceremony held on 3 February 2006, officiated by Rick Warrant at the Entertainment Gathering at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles – famous American cellists provided the music.

However, their marriage was annulled seven weeks later by the State of California, but both Bill and Blair remained silent on why this happened.

The following year, Tindall broke into Bill’s apartment stole a number of things, including a laptop which she later used to send false emails in Bill’s name, which affected him negatively – she also damaged his garden with herbicide.

Bill filed a restraining order against his ex-wife, which she violated in 2009, and was ordered to pay back $57,000 of Nye’s legal expenses. She failed to do so and Bill sued her in 2012.
