Wesley Carter ‘Wes’ Welker was born on 1 May 1981, and is an American football player who has played for the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos and St. Louis Rams.

Welker was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, US. He attended Heritage Hall School where he started his career as a football player, helping lead his team to the 2A State Football Championship, in this game scoring a 47-yard goal. Later Welker was named Oklahoma State Player of the year by USA Today and The Daily Oklahoma All State Player in 1999. Welker was supposedly too small to play at the college level, so he was not recruited heavily while he was in the high school, but later after attending scholarship in Texas Tech University he said about his experience “I was thinking I’d get a scholarship somewhere. When it didn’t happen when it was supposed to, on signing day, I was pretty hurt by it. … In the end, I don’t think I could’ve picked a better school than Texas Tech.”

At the university Welker proved to be a treasure for the Texas Tech Red Raiders football team. Based on his career in high school Welker gained the nickname “The Natural” from his recruiter, then won the Mosi Tatupu Award in 2003 which is given to the best special teams player annually in college football. He was named to the Sports Illustrated All-Decade Team as a punt returner, and he is a member of the Texas Tech chapter of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

In 2004 Welker was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine – Draft – so he signed as a free agent with the San Diego Charges, but he was released after his first game of the season; later the head coach Marty Schttenheimer acknowledged that releasing Welker was the biggest mistake he ever made. Welker signed with the Miami Dolphins instead after refusing an offer from the Chargers to take a place in the practice squad. On 10 October 2004 Welker played against the New England Patriots and he became the second player in NFL history to return a kickoff and a punt, kick an extra point and a, field goal and make a tackle in a single game.

In 2005 season Welker was promoted to be the third wide receiver slot after  and Marty Booker,Chris Chambers he finished the season with 29 receptions for 434 yards, also he had 43 punt returns for 390 yards. During the 2006 preseason and after many rumors about Welker, he started the season as the lone bright spot of the Dolphins’ offense, making a team-high 29 catches and team-high 299 yards in five games. By the end of the year Welker turned out be the target for backing-up quarterback Joey Harrington.

In 2007 Welker had an offer of $1.35 million for one year contract from the Dolphins, but the New England Patriots made Welker a better offer which make it difficult for the Dolphins. In the first ten games with the New England Patriots, he improved his total for receptions, touchdowns and yardage, having 16 receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns in the first two postseason games, making 11 receptions in a single game.

In 2009 season, with a knee injury Welker was away for week two and week three, but later in week six he caught ten passes for 150 yard and two touchdowns, in week 13 he achieved 167 receiving yards against the Dolphins, catching 13 passes, giving him 7 games with double digit receptions in week 16. In 2011 Welker recorded his 100th receptions of the season in week 14 against the Washington Redskins. Welker led the NFL in receptions, yards per game, receiving yards and receptions for first down, also he was ranked in the top five players receiving touchdowns.

In 2013 Welker won his third AFC Championship, and Super Bowl appearance. Welker passed Rod Smith for the most receptions by an undrafted player in NFL history, in a game against the Arizona Cardinals.
