In his teenage years, Max made his debut as the commentator on a New York City’s local TV station, hosting the program Max on Boxing, and then in the late ’90s, he was hired as an analyst on Entertainment and Sports Programming Network (ESPN)’s series “Friday Night Fights”; in 2002 he was given his own show entitled “Around the Horn”. He began hosting the 10 AM to noon program on Worldwide Electronic Publishing Network (WEPN), and then started his career as the boxing commentator on Home Box Office (HBO), hired for the telecast “Boxing After Dark”, but he eventually moved up to the HBO World Championship Boxing team, with Harold Lederman and Jim Lampey.

On 12 May 2010, Max was hired by the Cable News Network (CNN), and after HBO left boxing, Max signed a multi-year contract with ESPN at the end of 2018, and worked as the host of the show “First Take” alongside Stephen A. Smith until September 2021, when he left the show – according to sources, one of the reasons was his and Stephen’s relationship.

Stephen A. Smith stated for the New York Post: ‘He disagreed with me, and he disagreed with me three years ago, he disagreed two years ago and he disagreed this time. We’ve always understood where we stand with each other. He also knew that it was nothing personal and it was nothing against him as a talent. I just didn’t feel that moving forward he and I together was the right call and I said that the bosses. They disagree with me a few times in the past. Evidently this time they understood, and they made the move.’ Max hasn’t commented about leaving the show, but announced his new show “This Just In”.


Max is active on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, mostly posting about his work, since he prefers to keep his private life a secret. His Instagram account has been followed by over 200,000 people, while his Twitter has over 650,000 followers, and his official Facebook page has gained over 25,000 fans.

He made his acting debut appearing in the 2006 movie “Rocky Balboa” portraying HBO Commentator, and played himself in the 2015 movie “Creed” and its sequel “Creed II”, interviewing the boxers.
