James Earl Jones, Flynn’s father, was born on 17 January 1931, in Mississippi. His father wasn’t present growing up, as he was busy trying to become an actor in Hollywood; it was his mother and his mother’s parents who raised him.
James started developing a stutter when he was a child, later telling the Hollywood Reporter that he avoided speaking around others until a teacher in high school asked him to read his poem aloud, which he did without stuttering. After matriculating from high school, James went on to study pre-med at the University of Michigan, but dropped out when he discovered his love for acting. Shortly after, he left to be in the military, during the Korean War of the early 1950s. After that, he made the move to New York to study at the American Theatre Wing, going by the stage name Todd Jones for some time. He would work side jobs such as cleaning to be able to support his early career.
At the beginning of his theatre career, he worked merely as a stage carpenter at the Ramsdell Theater in Michigan, later being promoted to stage manager. His film debut was in 1964 in “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Peter Sellars. He then played a Haitian rebel surgeon in “The Comedians” with major stars Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. In 1977, James voiced the iconic Darth Vader in “Star Wars: A New Hope,” then reprising the role in the sequels “The Empire Strikes Back” in 1980 and “Return of the Jedi” in 1983. David Prowse was the man visible during the films, but his accent wasn’t suitable for the character and was replaced by James’ voice in post-production.
James asked not to be credited for the first two films, as he said it was more special effects than his voice, but later took credit for the third one.

Before meeting Flynn’s mother, in 1964 James met fell in love with American actress and singer Julienne Marie, and married her four years later in 1968. They didn’t have any children together and divorced in 1972. In 1982, James married Cecilia Hart, and they had their son Flynn that same year. Cecilia was previously married to Bruce Weitz until their divorce in 1980. She struggled with ovarian cancer for many years and died from complications in October of 2016.
