Chad went to Crescent City Baptist High School, located in Metairie, Louisiana. During his high school years Chad played baseball and was extremely successful as he won the All-State and district MVP awards on two occasions, in junior and senior years. This brought him to the attention of major league scouts, and as a result, he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 34th round, in the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft, directly from high school, and his career started on the 23rd June 2001, when he signed his first professional contract, but he didn’t make his professional debut until 2002, and 2003 in the majors. He spent 2002 season in the Single-A California League and was rather good, posting an ERA of 2.26, which had put him on the 10th place in the minor leagues, partly justifying his contract.

Chad made his major league debut on the 1st August 2003 and became the youngest player in the history of the franchise at 20 years and four months; he was also the fourth youngest player in the league at the time. He played for the Devil Rays until 2004, when he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Kevin Cash, a catcher. Chad didn’t stay long in Toronto, making only five appearances, with poor performance, which led to his trade to the Oakland Athletics, for a future draft pick, which turned out to be Dustin Majewski. Firstly, Chad played for the Sacramento River Cats of the Athletics Triple-A team, but after a few successful plays, he was brought into the first squad. The 2006 season was his career best in several aspects, including an ERA of 3.08. He continued with great plays in the following season, becoming one of the best players that the Athletics had on their roster, which included Dan Haren and Joe Blanton.

However, this wasn’t enough to keep him in Oakland, as he was traded to the Chicago Cubs.

He couldn’t find his form in Chicago, and after a dismal 2009 season, he was waived by the franchise, and joined the San Diego Padres, though on a minor contract, and was sent to the Portland Beavers in the Triple-A league, though returning two weeks later, debuting against the Colorado Rockies; he contributed to his team’s victory, giving up zero runs on 3 hits and a no-decision.

However, apparently he wasn’t good enough for the Padres, and was dealt further to the New York Yankees, where he won his first and only World Series in 2009, contributing to their successful post-season with an ERA of 3.43.

However, he was released by the franchise in March 2010, and through 2016 he switched between eight teams, playing again for the Athletics during 2010 season, then the Yankees again the same year, the Washington Nationals in 2011, Toronto Blue Jays from August 2011 until January 2012 when he joined the Miami Marlins, and in late 2012 became a part of the San Francisco Giants. During his stay in San Francisco, Chad had his best ERA result of his entire career of 3.06.

After the Giants, he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies but failed to make the team as he couldn’t successfully complete his physical. In February 2015 he tried to join the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the nerve irritation kept him off the diamond the entire 2015 season, and was forced to undergo carpal tunnel release surgery.

Having fully recovered, Chad decided to try his luck elsewhere, and in 2016 signed with the Pericos de Puebla of the Mexican Baseball League. He felt rejuvenated on the mound, saving 33 games as a closer in 36 regular games, while also adding seven more saved games to his name during the playoffs, and thanks to his great plays, the Pericos won the LMB Championship, their first in 31 seasons. That year, he also made the LMB All-Star team. However, in February 2017 he was sent to the Acereros de Monclova alongside other players, including Manny Rodriguez, Rodolfo Amador, Daric Barton, Nyjer Morgan, and Willy Taveras for the right-hand pitcher Joaquín Lara.

Regarding his personal life, Chad has been married to Syndal Gorden since 2011.

Back in 2013, Chad had some troubles with the law; he was sentenced to 100 hours of community service, because of his alleged groping of a woman that was laying on a gurney at the Desert Springs Hospital, in which Chad spent a night after some problems he experienced earlier that night. Also, his sentence included another 100 hours of impulse control counseling.
