He stayed with the team for eight seasons until 2004, during which he won three consecutive NBA championship titles from 2000 to 2002, with teammates including Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, under coach Phil Jackson. In 2004, he signed as a free agent with the Golden State Warriors, however, his game performance started to decline, so he was traded to the Utah Jazz in 2006, and led the team to the Western Conference finals. Two years later, he was traded to the Houston Rockets, but was waived at his request by the team, signing with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the rest of the season. After the season was ended, he joined the Dallas Mavericks, with whom he appeared in nine games before he suffered an injury, and asked to be released from his contract. He then spent one more season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, after which he quit his playing career.

Following his retirement, Derek Fisher launched his coaching career when hired to serve as the head coach of the New York Knicks, with whom he signed a two-year contract worth $25 million in 2014.
