Reese was raised in New Orleans alongside her brother John D. Witherspoon, by their mother Mary Elizabeth ‘Betty’ (nee Reese) who’s teaching nursing at Vanderbilt University, and father John Draper Witherspoon who was a lieutenant in the US Army Reserve; Reese was raised as an Episcopalian and the family often went to church together while she was growing up. She was only seven when she began appearing in commercials, but spent her years at Harding Academy and Harpeth Hall School focused on reading books, appearing in school plays and playing various sports. Reese matriculated in 1994 and then enrolled at Stanford University, however, she dropped out a year or two later wanting to focus on acting.

Reese’s journey to stardom began in the first half of the 1990s, as she started winning roles in various movies and TV series, however, it was her amazing performance in the 1996 movie “Fear” opposite Mark Wahlberg that garnered widespread attention; this marked the beginning of a remarkable career that would see her evolve from a promising young talent to an Oscar-winning actress and successful producer.

One of Reese’s most iconic roles came in 2001, when she portrayed Elle Woods in the comedy movie “Legally Blonde”; it showcased her comedic prowess as her character Elle, a fashionable and determined law student became an iconic character, and Reese’s performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

She continued to take on diverse roles that showcased her acting range; in 2005, she won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in the biographical movie “Walk the Line”; her playing of the country music legend not only demonstrated her ability to take on complex characters, but also showcased her musical talents, as she did her own singing in the film.

In addition to her acting career, Reese has also ventured into film production with the launch of her own company Type A Films in 2003; this allowed her to have more control over the projects she took on, and opened up opportunities to create stories with strong female protagonists. One of the first films produced by Type A Films was “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde”, a sequel to the original film that further solidified Reese’s commitment to playing strong female characters.

As her production career progressed, in 2012 Reese founded another production company Pacific Standard, and later in 2016 co-founded Hello Sunshine. She’s been a vocal advocate for gender equality in Hollywood, using her platforms to address issues such as the gender pay gap and the lack of representation of women in various roles within the industry.

Reese’s success as a producer is evident in the critical acclaim and commercial success of the 2014 movie “Gone Girl”, based on Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel. The film, produced by Pacific Standard, was a thriller that captivated audiences, and further established Reese’s prowess as a producer.

Another notable project from Reese’s production company is the HBO series “Big Little Lies”, which aired from 2017 through 2019, and in which she also starred alongside an ensemble cast that included Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern. The series, based on Liane Moriarty’s novel, explores the lives of a group of women from Monterey, California and tackles themes of domestic violence, friendship and societal expectations. Reese’s performance earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, while the show itself received widespread acclaim for its storytelling and the performance of its cast.

In recent years, Reese has continued to make significant contributions to the entertainment industry through her production company Hello Sunshine; it’s been involved in producing various successful projects, including the drama series “The Morning Show”, which has been airing since 2019, stars Jennifer Aniston and explores the challenges faced by women in the media industry.

Beyond her achievements in film and television, Reese is also an entrepreneur; in 2015, she launched Draper James, a lifestyle and clothing brand that celebrates Southern style and hospitality.
