John R. Cash was born on 26 February 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas, USA, one of seven children of Ray Cash and Carrie Cloveree. At the age of three, the family moved to Dyess, Arkansas, a colony established for low-income families to work on the land that would later become their property. From the age of five, Johnny started working in the cotton fields, and would sing in the field to entertain his family.
His interest in music increased, and at just 12 years old, he began writing his own songs. He was taught to play guitar, and while in high school sang on a local radio station.
He joined the US Air Force on 7 July 1950 and was sent to the 12th Radio Squadron Mobile of the US Air Force Security Service at Landsberg, West Germany, serving as a Morse code operator intercepting Soviet Army transmissions.
