He started well, defeating The Great Wojo to win the WWA World Heavyweight Championship on 14 August 1986 in the city of Dearborn, Michigan. In 1988, he joined Continental Wrestling Association, forming a tag team with fellow wrestler Billy Joe Travis to win CWA World Tag Team Championship after defeating Cuban Choir Boys on May 29 that same year.
