Roger attended Beverly Hills High School and after matriculation enrolled at Stanford University where he studied Industrial Engineering. However, he decided that he didn’t want to become an engineer, and instead enlisted in the V-12 Navy College Training Program. For the next two years, he served in the navy and after the war, he returned to Stanford to complete his studies, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1947. The following year, he found his first job, at US Electrical Motors in Los Angeles, however, after just four days he quit his job, with the statement that he had made a terrible mistake becoming an engineer.
