Kerrigan began skating at six years of age, while her elder brothers took up ice hockey. At eight years old she began attending private skating lessons, and a year later she won her first medal. She became a well known figure skater at the national level as she was very promising, had a good perspective in jumps, although rather weak at the compulsory figures, but then in 1990 compulsory figures were excluded from figure skating championships. In 1991, she placed third in the Unites States of America Championship which led her to participate in the World Figure Skating Championship in 1991, where Nancy won the bronze medal. The incident became known as “The Whack Heard Round the World”, during which her knee was injured. Only several weeks after the attack Kerrigan skated so well that her performance brought her silver in the Lillehammer Olympics, 1994.

After these Olympic Games Nancy retired from competitions, and took part in various skating shows like „Champions on Ice“ and others.
