Kevin and his brother Robert were raised in Philadelphia solely by their mother Nancy Hart who worked at the University of Pennsylvania, and died in 2007; Kevin’s father Henry Robert Witherspoon was a drug addict.

Kevin studied at George Washington High School and upon matriculating in 1997 enrolled at Community College of Philadelphia; he soon dropped out wanting to pursue comedy and moved to New York City.

Hart’s venture into the world of acting began with small roles in TV series such as “Undeclared” and “The Big House”, however, it was his performance in the 2003 horror comedy film “Scary Movie 3” that made him popular.

Another one of his breakthrough roles was in the 2008 movie “Fool’s Gold”, in which he starred alongside Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. Although the film received mixed reviews, Hart’s performance was praised for bringing humor into the action-comedy.

The year 2012 proved to be a turning point in his career as he starred in the romantic comedy “Think Like a Man”, based on Steve Harvey’s best-selling book. The film was a hit, grossing over $96 million worldwide; Hart’s portrayal of Cedric, a divorced man navigating the complexities of modern relationships resonated with audiences and further solidified his status as a skillful actor.

Hart continued his success with the release of the 2013 movie “Grudge Match”, in which he shared the screen with legendary actors Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone; the film is centered on aging boxers coming out of retirement for one last match.

It was the 2014 movie “Ride Along” that catapulted Hart to mainstream stardom; paired with Ice Cube, Hart played Ben Barber, a high school security guard aspiring to become a police officer and seeking the approval of his girlfriend’s tough detective brother. The chemistry between Hart and Ice Cube was a major selling point, contributing to the film’s massive success at the box office, grossing over $150 million worldwide.

In the same year, Hart starred in “Think Like a Man Too”, the sequel to the 2012 hit movie; it reunited the cast for a Las Vegas wedding and once again, Hart’s comedic timing and on-screen presence contributed to the film’s box office success.

The streak or success continued with the release of the 2014 movie “About Last Night”, a romantic comedy in which Hart starred alongside Regina Hall. The film, a modern reimagining of the 1986 original, showcased Hart’s ability to navigate both comedic and romantic elements, further expanding his range as an actor.

In 2015, he collaborated with Will Ferrell in the comedy film “Get Hard”, which follows a wealthy businessman preparing for a prison sentence with the help of a hired mentor.

Continuing to explore different genres, Hart took on a more dramatic role in the 2016 movie “Kevin Hart: What Now?” It was recorded live in front of a crowd of 53,000 at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field and while primarily a showcase of his comedic talents, the film also provided a glimpse into Hart’s personal life and experiences.

Following the success of the above mentioned movie “Central Intelligence”, Hart starred in the 2017 film “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”, a sequel to the 1995 classic “Jumanji”. It featured a cast full of critically acclaimed actors and actresses, including Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black and Karen Gillan; Hart’s portrayal of Fridge, a high school Football Player transformed into a zoologist in the virtual jungle provided amazing comedic moments. The film’s unexpected success, grossing over $962 million worldwide solidified Hart’s status as a box office star.

In 2019, Hart took on a more dramatic role in the movie “The Upside”, co-starring Bryan Cranston – based on a true story, it explored the unlikely friendship between a wealthy quadriplegic man and his caregiver, portrayed by Hart.

Hart’s career hasn’t been without its challenges; in 2019, he was involved in a car accident that left him with serious injuries and required an extensive recovery period. Despite the setback, Hart returned to the screen after only a couple of months.

In recent years, Hart’s continued to diversify his portfolio with projects such as the dramatic series “True Story” on Netflix, in which he plays a fictionalized version of himself caught up in a web of lies and crime. Most recently, in 2024, he portrayed Cyrus in the action crime comedy movie “Lift”.
