Lori is the daughter of Jacques Singer, who was a conductor, and his wife Leslie, a concert pianist. She has a brother, Marc Singer, twin brother Gregory – both are actors as well – and a sister Claude. Bryan Singer, famous director and writer is one of her cousins. Growing up in a musical family led to her learning how to play the cello, and as she got older she enrolled at the Julliard School in New York, and was mentored by Leonard Rose. She then started performing as a solo act, making her debut at 13 years old with the Oregon Symphony. Since then she has held numerous concert in such prestigious venues such as Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall among many others.
However, instead of a career in music, Lori decided to pursue an acting career; she made her debut in the film “Born Beautiful” (1982), and the same year was selected for the role of Julie Miller in the TV series “Fame” (1982-1983) which launched her to stardom, and the following year she was cast in the lead role of Ariel in the Oscar Award-nominated film “Footloose” (1984), with Kevin Bacon and John Lithgow in lead roles; she won the ShoWest Award for the film in the category Breakthrough Performer of the Year. The next year was quite busy for Lori as she featured in several films, including “The Falcon and the Snowman” (1985), and “Trouble in Mind” (1985) starring Keith Carradine and Kris Kristofferson. By the end of the decade, Lori had appeared in “Made in U.S.A.” (1987), “Summer Heat” (1987), and “Warlock” (1989), all of which increased her net worth.
She started the ‘90s with the lead role in the television film “Storm and Sorrow”, and two years later appeared in “Equinox” with Matthew Modine and Lara Flynn Boyle. In 1993 she shared the screen with Peter Weller and Stacy Keach in the thriller “Sunset Grill”, and the same year appeared in Robert Altman’s Oscar Award-nominated film “Short Cuts”, with Andie MacDowell, Julianne Moore and Tim Robbins. After that her career started to decline, and she has had few major roles, apart from in the short sci-fi TV series “VR.5” (1995), and until 2015 and the role in the film “Experimenter”, starring John Palladino, Anthony Edwards and Jim Gaffigan. Most recently she lent her voice to Linda Bishop in the documentary “God Knows Where I Am” (2016), and she will appear in the thriller “The Institute”, starring James Franco, Pamela Anderson and Topher Grace, which is scheduled for release in late 2017.
She has also worked as executive producer and has been credited for the documentary “Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God” in 2013, directed and written by Alex Gibney. The film was quite successful, earning three Primetime Emmy Awards among others, and several nominations.
Regarding her personal life, Lori was married to Richard Emery from 1981 until 1999; the couple had one child before divorcing.
