John Robert Thompson Jr., born in the 2 September, 1941, is an American sports commentator who was also a former basketball player and coach most notably for his time working with Georgetown Hoyas.

So how much is Thompson’s net worth? As of late 2016, based on authoritative sources he has a net worth of $3 million, acquired from his years as a basketball player and later on as a coach and sports commentator.

Born in Washington, D.C., Thompson fell in love with basketball at a very young age. His mother wanted for him to have a good education so she sent him to a Catholic school at the Archbishop Carroll High School. He performed exceptionally well during his high school years, even leading his team at a 24-0 record during his last term.

After an outstanding high school record, Thompson then went to Providence College. During his playing time with Providence, he became part of the first team to go to the NCAA tournament in 1964 and was also an All-American in his senior year. With his accolades, he was then drafted to the National Basketball Association and became part of Boston Celtics.

Thompson played with Boston Celtics from 1964 and 1966. After only two years, Thompson decided that his passion is in coaching so he decided to retire early and focused on what he love. Although his career playing professional basketball was short-lived it still helped him with his net worth.

In 1966, Thompson’s new career as a coach started when he worked with St. Anthony High School. He worked with the school for six years until he transferred to coaching Georgetown University.

Although the men’s basketball team of Georgetown University was not performing very well, Thompson turned the team around and made it one of the most successful teams producing the most graduates and even NBA players. His three-decade long career with Georgetown garnered him numerous awards and accolades and became the highlight of his whole career. His successful stint as a coach tremendously increased his net worth and helped his career enormously.

Thompson took home seven Coach of the Year Award over the course of thirty years and has trained basketball players like Sleepy Floyd, Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Alonzo Mourning and Allen Iverson who are now known to have led successful playing careers.

In 1999, Thompson decided to retire from coaching Georgetown University and shifted careers as a sports commentator. He got his own sports talk show, “The John Thompson Show” that was aired in ESPN 980. He also has a contract with Clear Channel Radio and Sports Talk 980. His various works as a sports commentator also helped in terms of his wealth.

In terms of his personal life, he has three children John Thompson III, Ronny Thompson, and Tiffany Thompson.
