In 1962 Joe became an amateur free agent, and in the same year he signed a contract with the Houston Colt .45s, and marked the beginning of his net worth when he made his debut appearance with the team in September of 1963. Joe played there ten seasons, until 1971, and during his tenure at the Colt .45s he made the All Star Team twice, in 1966 and 1970.
