Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, Nelson grew up playing basketball during his years in Chester High School, helping his team win the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association AAAA State Championship. His performances in high school helped him land a spot at Saint Joseph’s University.

During his time at Saint Joseph’s, Nelson was already receiving accolades even during his freshmen year for his performance with the basketball team, and in 2000 he was named the National Freshman of the Year. In 2003 he declared for the NBA draft, but decided to stay and finish his college playing years, and in his final college year, Nelson took home awards including the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, the 2004 Wooden Award, the 2004, Bob Cousy Award, the 2004 Naismisth Award, the Oscar Roberts Trophy and the Rupp Trophy to name just a few. He also earned first-team All American Honors and first-team All-Atlantic 10 in 2004. These recognitions all helped him land a spot in the NBA.

Right after graduation, Nelson was drafted the 20th overall pick by the Denver Nuggets, but was immediately traded to the Orlando Magic. His contract with Orlando Magic not only started his professional career as a basketball player but also his net worth. Nelson played with the Magic for ten straight years from 2004 to 2014, during this time earning NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors, and was also considered as Rookie of the Year. In 2009, he was chosen to be part of the All-Star Game along with his teammates Rashard Lewis and Dwight Howard.

In July 2014, Nelson transferred to the Dallas Mavericks, but then in December of the same year, he once again moved, this time to the Boston Celtics. He lasted with the team until the end of 2015, when he transferred to the Denver Nuggets. His years playing with various teams in the NBA has been the main source of his net worth. Today he is an active player in the league, and still playing with the Nuggets.

As of early 2017, Jameer has played almost 900 games in the NBA including in six play-off series with the Magic, setting a consistent record that has seen him averaging 30 minutes per game.
