Who is Jonny Kim?
Jonathan Yong ‘Jonny’ Kim was born in Los Angeles, California USA, on 5 February 1984 – his zodiac sign is Aquarius, and he holds American nationality. He’s gained recognition for all the things which he’s managed to achieve to this day, including becoming a NASA astronaut, physician, and serving as a Lieutenant Commander and a SEAL – Sea, Air And Land team – in the US Navy.
Early life and education
Jonny was raised in Los Angeles alongside his younger brother, by their parents who emigrated to the US from South Korea sometime in the first half of the ‘80s; their mother worked at an elementary school as a substitute teacher, while their father opened a liquor store not long after he’d arrived in the US.

Jonny didn’t have a great childhood because his father was violent – it’s believed that he was an alcoholic; in February 2002, Jonny’s father threatened to kill his wife and two sons, and was shot by the police in his attic.
Jonny was rather shy while growing up, and spent most of his time studying rather than hanging out with his peers. He was amongst the best students at Santa Monica High School, and received several Advanced Placements; Jonny competed in both water polo and swimming with his school teams – he matriculated in 2002.
Jonny enrolled at University of San Diego in 2008, and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 2012.
He continued his education at Harvard Medical School, becoming a Doctor of Medicine in 2016; Jonny finished his medical internship at both Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital (emergency medicine).
Joining the Navy
Jonny was 16 when he learned about the US Naval Special Warfare Command, and decided to join; he was still attending high school at that time, and spent the following two years preparing himself physically. Jonny spoke about his decision to join the Navy in an interview, stating that he was a scared boy without dreams before the Navy, and that it was only after having joined it that he began to believe in himself.
He enlisted in 2002, aged 18, and became a seaman recruit; he eventually graduated and joined the SEAL Team 3 as a special warfare operator. Jonny was deployed on more than 100 combat missions in the Middle East, serving as a point man, navigator, sniper, and combat medic. He joined the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps in 2009, and left three years later, so thast he could join the Medical Corps.
Jonny has won various medals (and ribbons) for his service, including a Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy and Marine Corps Recommendation Medal, Bronze Star and Silver Star Medal. In March 2022, he was promoted to SEAL Lieutenant Commander.
Becoming an astronaut
While attending Harvard Medical School, Jonny learned about Scott E. Parazynski, who was both a successful physician and an astronaut; Scott’s story motivated Jonny to try and become an astronaut, and on 7 June 2017, he learned that his application was accepted, amongst 11 others from more than 18,000 applicants. He joined NASA Astronaut Group 22, began his training on 21 August 2017, and completed it on 10 January 2022.
NASA confirmed on 9 December 2020 that Jonny will be one of 18 astronauts who will fly to the Moon in 2024.
