Pat was adopted by Mary Kathleen and James Donald McConaughey when he was two years old, and was raised in Uvalde, Texas, alongside his brothers Michael and Matthew.

He attended a local high school, and upon matriculating in 1980, enrolled at the Southwest Texas Junior College, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 1984.

Matthew was raised in Uvalde by his parents, who had an interesting love life as they married three times with each other. His mother was a kindergarten teacher, and his father was the owner of an oil pipe supply business. He is the youngest in the family, and as he said he was a surprise since his mother supposedly couldn’t conceive after she gave birth Michael, so adopted Pat, but five years later Matthew was born, and they gave him this name which means ‘gift from God’.

Matthew planned to become a lawyer, however, his family couldn’t support him financially at college, so since he had experience with acting in some music videos, he pursued an acting career.

He made his acting debut on the big screen in the 1993 movie “Dazed and Confused”, alongside Jason Landon and Wiley Wiggins, followed by appearances in movies such as “Boys on the Side”, “Scorpion Spring”, and “Glory Daze”, among others, before he was cast to star alongside Sandra Bullock and Samuel L. Jackson in the 1996 movie “A Time to Kill”. For his portrayal of Jake Tyler Brigance, Matthew won the Chicago Film Critics Association Award – Most Promising Actor, and MTV Movie + TV Award – Best Breakthrough Performance.


In the following years, he made appearances in numerous movies, such as “Larger than Life”, “Amistad” and “The Newton Boys”, and was then cast to play Ed in “Edtv” which brought him a nomination for Teen Choice Award Film- Sexiest Love Scene, shared with Elizabeth Hurley.

In the early 2000s, he was recognized as the most likeable romantic comedy actor, starring in “The Wedding Planner”, “Thirteen Conversation About One Thing”, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”, and “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past”, among others.

Camila gave birth to their first son Levi in July 2008, and in January 2010 their daughter Vida was born, then younger son Livingston in December 2012.

As of December 2021, Matthew is still in a marriage, and has three children.
