Early life and education
Tommy was raised in The Bronx alongside his siblings Joan, Jean and Mary Ann, by their American father Thomas Mottola Sr. and Italian mother Peggy Bonetti.
He became interested in music while attending Iona Gramma School; upon completing his elementary school education in 1962, Tommy enrolled at Iona Prep, from which he matriculated in 1966.

He went on to attend a military school, and upon completing it enrolled at Hofstra University, however, Tommy dropped out wanting to pursue a career in music.
Tommy’s career
While still attending University, Tommy joined the cover band The Exotics as their guitarist and singer, which was why he then quit the university.
In the mid-‘60s, he began working for CBS Records as their recording artist, and used ‘T. D. Valentine’ as his professional name. Because he failed to gain recognition as a recording artist, Tommy began working for the powerhouse Chappell Publishing, and then founded his own company Champion Entertainment Organization, gaining recognition when he signed American pop rock duo Hall & Oates to his company.
In 1988, Sony Music hired Tommy to run their operations in the US, and he became the company’s Chairman/CEO two years later. Tommy helped Sony Music expand into more than 60 countries, and helped sign some of the biggest global stars, such as Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. Some of the other stars which Tommy had signed included Gloria Estefan, Jessica Simpson and Shakir, so whereas the company had $800 million revenue prior to Tommy becoming Chairman/CEO, this rose to $6 billion in the year 2000.
He had also worked with Michael Jackson in 1990, however, in 2001, Michael revealed that he was no longer friends with Tommy, because he believed him to be racist.
Tommy left Sony Music Entertainment in January 2003, bought the not-so-successful Casablanca Records, and managed to resurrect it; he then signed popular musicians Mika and Lohan.
He published his book “Hitmaker” in January 2013.
Most recently, in March 2021, Tommy co-founded the entertainment and media company NTERTAIN, together with the company Range Media Partners and CEO of Neon16 Lex Borrero; Tommy and Lex are today running the company.

He married his third wife, Mexican pop singer and actress Ariadna Thalia Sodi Miranda on 2 December 2000, and she gave birth to their daughter Sabrina Sakae Mottola Sodi in October 2007, while their son Matthew Alejandro Mottola Sodi followed in June 2011.
