Who is Tommy Mottola?

Thomas Daniel ‘Tommy’ Mottola was born in New York City, USA on 14 July 1948 – his zodiac sign is Cancer, and he holds American nationality. He’s a music producer, executive and author, while he’s probably known best for being the former husband of Mariah Carey, a famous American singer-songwriter and actress.

Early life and education

Tommy was raised in The Bronx alongside his siblings Joan, Jean and Mary Ann, by their American father Thomas Mottola Sr. and Italian mother Peggy Bonetti.

He became interested in music while attending Iona Gramma School; upon completing his elementary school education in 1962, Tommy enrolled at Iona Prep, from which he matriculated in 1966.

He went on to attend a military school, and upon completing it enrolled at Hofstra University, however, Tommy dropped out wanting to pursue a career in music.

Tommy’s career

While still attending University, Tommy joined the cover band The Exotics as their guitarist and singer, which was why he then quit the university.

In the mid-‘60s, he began working for CBS Records as their recording artist, and used ‘T. D. Valentine’ as his professional name. Because he failed to gain recognition as a recording artist, Tommy began working for the powerhouse Chappell Publishing, and then founded his own company Champion Entertainment Organization, gaining recognition when he signed American pop rock duo Hall & Oates to his company.

In 1988, Sony Music hired Tommy to run their operations in the US, and he became the company’s Chairman/CEO two years later. Tommy helped Sony Music expand into more than 60 countries, and helped sign some of the biggest global stars, such as Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. Some of the other stars which Tommy had signed included Gloria Estefan, Jessica Simpson and Shakir, so whereas the company had $800 million revenue prior to Tommy becoming Chairman/CEO, this rose to $6 billion in the year 2000.

He had also worked with Michael Jackson in 1990, however, in 2001, Michael revealed that he was no longer friends with Tommy, because he believed him to be racist.

Tommy left Sony Music Entertainment in January 2003, bought the not-so-successful Casablanca Records, and managed to resurrect it; he then signed popular musicians Mika and Lohan.

He published his book “Hitmaker” in January 2013.

Most recently, in March 2021, Tommy co-founded the entertainment and media company NTERTAIN, together with the company Range Media Partners and CEO of Neon16 Lex Borrero; Tommy and Lex are today running the company.

Love life and marriage with Mariah Carey

Tommy has married thrice. He first exchanged vows with Lisa Clark in 1971; she’s probably known best for being the daughter of Sam Clark, the CEO of ABC Records. Tommy converted to Judaism for Lisa, she gave birth to their two children, but they divorced in 1990.

Tommy married his second wife Mariah Carey, on 5 June 1993, in a large ceremony attended by many of their friends and family members; they didn’t have children together, and divorced on 5 March 1998, following a one-year separation.

He married his third wife, Mexican pop singer and actress Ariadna Thalia Sodi Miranda on 2 December 2000, and she gave birth to their daughter Sabrina Sakae Mottola Sodi in October 2007, while their son Matthew Alejandro Mottola Sodi followed in June 2011.

Tommy’s favorite season is summer, as he enjoys going yachting and swimming in the ocean.

He’s into travelling, and has been to more than 20 US states for both work and pleasure, while he’s vacationed in various European and Asian countries, with his dream travel destination being Dubrovnik, Croatia.

He’s a dog-lover, and his and his wife’s pet dog can be seen featured in many of his Instagram pictures.

Tommy was physically quite active during his 20s, 30s and 40s, as he had multiple training sessions at the gym every week, however, he no longer works out nowadays.

He enjoys watching movies in his spare time – his favorite actor and actress are Al Pacino and Scarlett Johansson, while a couple of his favorite films include the trilogy “The Godfather”, “Scent of a Woman” and “Scarface”.
