Erick Dampier grew up in Mississippi where he went to the Lawrence County High School in Monticello, and led their basketball team to two state championships. Following matriculation, Dampier joined Mississippi State University, where he played from 1993 to 1996, helping them to win a Southeastern Conference tournament championship and also led them to the NCAA Final Four.

The Indiana Pacers selected his as the 10th pick overall in the 1996 NBA Draft, but he didn’t have the best of times in his rookie season, averaging 5.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 14.6 minutes per game in 72 appearances. In August 1997, Erick and Duane Ferrell were traded to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for the legendary Chris Mullin. Dampier established himself as the Warriors’ starting center during his seven-year spell in the Bay, recording 11.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, and 32.4 minutes per game in 82 starts. He repeated the success of playing in and starting every game in the 2002-03 season, so during his time with Golden State, Erick played a significant role. In the 2003-04 season, his last with the Warriors, Dampier averaged career highs in points (12.3), rebounds (12.0), and minutes per game (32.5), alongside 1.9 blocks and 74 games – all starts.

In August 2004, the Golden State Warriors decided to trade Dampier alongside Dan Dickau and Evan Eschmeyer to the Dallas Mavericks for Christian Laettner, Eduardo Najera, and two future first round picks. Erick started in 56 out of 59 matches in his first season with the Mavs, averaging 9.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, and 27.3 minutes per game, while the next year, he was a part of the Mavs team which reached the NBA Finals, but eventually lost to the Miami Heat in six games. Dampier remained the starting center for the next four seasons, but failed to average more than 7.0 points and 25.0 minutes per match.

The Mavs traded Erick to the Charlotte Bobcats in July 2010 for Tyson Chandler and Alexis Ajinca, but he failed to make a single appearance for the North Carolina team, being waived the following September and signing a fresh deal with the Miami Heat in November. Erick was very unfortunate to lose his second NBA Finals, this time to his former team, the Dallas Mavericks, losing in six games. In February 2012, Dampier signed a ten-day contract with the Atlanta Hawks, and after another one that followed, he stayed in Georgia for the remainder of the season, after which he decided to retire from professional basketball.

Regarding his personal life, Erick Dampier’s most intimate details such as marital status and the number of children are unknown as he successfully manages to keep them out of the public eye.
