In just Eddie’s seventh professional fight in 2008, he would win his first championship, the MFC Welterweight Championship, which would be the start of a significant increase in his net worth.

He was well-known for fighting against bigger fighters, but would eventually find his first professional loss against Nick Thompson. He then joined EliteXC before signing with the Japanese promotion DREAM, and would win against Andre Amade. Afterwards, Eddie would fight at Dream 5: Lightweight Grand Prix 2008 Final Round which he would win against Tatsuya Kawajiri, knocking him out. He then lost to Shinya Aoki by a submission in the first round. He signed with Bellator soon after.

Alvarez joined Bellator’s lightweight tournament, and would reach the finals of the tournament which would be held at Bellator 12, becoming Bellator’s first ever lightweight champion after applying a rear naked choke to his opponent Toby Imada. He then had a non-title match at “Bellator 17” against Josh Neer which he would win, and his next opponent would be Roger Huerta who he defeated via TKO. In 2011, he retained his title against Pat Curran and would then face Michael Chandler in what was considered 2011 Fight of the Year, which Alvarez lost by submission. After a few more fights, he agreed to sign a contract with UFC, after being released from Bellator.

In 2014, Eddie made his UFC promotional debut against Donald Cerrone as a co-main event of UFC 178, however, he would lose the fight via unanimous decision. The following year, he won against Gilbert Melendez before facing Anthony Pettis in 2016 at UFC Fight Night 81, winning on a split decision. This led him to a title match against Rafael Dos Anjos for the UFC Lightweight Championship, which he would win via TKO. He defended his title against then UFC Featherweight champion Conor McGregor, and would lose his title. Eddie then became the coach of The Ultimate Fighter 26, leading to an eventual match with former WSOF Lightweight Champion Justin Gaethje, winning the match via knockout. All of these fights have helped increase his net worth further.

For his personal life, it is known that Alvarez has been married to Jamie since 2008, with whom he has a son. The family resides in Northeast Philadelphia.
