In 1998, he made his major league debut and would do a one-hit, no-walk, 20-strikeout against the Houston Astros breaking Bill Gullickson’s rookie record. He finished the season with a 13-6 record, receiving the National League Rookie of the Year award despite missing a month due to elbow soreness.

However, in 2008 Kerry was not re-signed by the Cubs.
