Born in Naples, Italy, Golino is the son of an Italian father and mother, who was a painter. When her parents separated she spent most of her time growing up in Athens and Sorrento, exposing her to different language and culture.
Golino initially wanted to be a doctor specializing in cardiology as she suffered scoliosis herself when she was young, which involved surgery in the US where she also learnt English, but at the age of 14 she was exposed to the modelling world, and subsequently worked as a model in Athens and Milan. She appeared in commercials for cosmetics and perfumes, and also modelled for jeans and bathing suits. Her early years as a model helped jumpstart her career, and also her net worth.
In 1983, Golino entered the world of acting when her uncle pushed her to audition for the movie “A Joke of Destiny”, in which she won a part and actually starred in the movie, and experience which encouraged her to partly forget the world of modelling and studying, and to focus on acting.
Golino soon started appearing in independent films, including “My Dearest Son”, “Little Flames” and “A Tale of Love” which garnered her two recognitions at the Venice Film Festival in 1986 – she took home the Best Actress award – the Volpi Cup, and the Golden Ciak award which as an Italian actress, one of the highlights of her career. Other notable films that Golino was involved in during the late ‘80s were “Three Gold Rimmed Glasses” and “Three Sisters”. Her transition into acting elevated her career, and tremendously increased her wealth.
In 1988, Golino entered Hollywood and debuted in the film “Big Top Pee Wee”. That same year, she was also cast in the movie “Rain Man”, playing the girlfriend of Tom Cruise. Her memorable ‘first kiss’ with Dustin Hoffman also became an iconic scene in the movie.
Golino also starred in the comedy movie “Hot Shots!” and “Hot Shots! Part Deux.” Her success in Hollywood also helped tremendously in her net worth.
Other than acting, Golino also ventured into directing, initially directing the short film “Armandino e il Madre” in 2010, and then the film “Honey” in 2013.
Today, Golino is still active in the film industry. She most recently became a part of the main competition jury for the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
In terms of her personal life, Golino is apparently now single, having recently ended her relationship with Riccardo Scamarcio, the Italian actor and producer after 10 years. She has previously been in relationships with Peter Del Monte, Benicio del Toro, Fabrizio Bentivoglio and Andrea Di Stefano since the 1980s.
