Who is Bernnadette Stanis?

Bernnadette Stanislaus was born in Brooklyn, New York City USA, on 22 December 1953 – her zodiac sign is Capricorn, and she holds American nationality. She’s an actress and an author, who has appeared in close to 30 movies and TV series, probably still known best for her debut TV series appearance, portraying Thelma Evans, the main character in the hit comedy series “Good Times”. It was created by Mike Evans, Norman Lear and Eric Monte, also starred Ja’net DuBois and Ralph Carter, and follows the members of a poor family who are living in a Chicago housing project; the series aired from 1974 to 1979, and won one of the eight awards for which it was nominated.

Early life and education

Bernnadette was raised alongside her four siblings in Brooklyn, by their parents Gregory and Eula; nothing is known about her family, as Bernnadette respects their privacy.

She became interested in acting while studying at Erasmus Hall High School, and appeared in numerous plays at the school, mostly portraying lead characters. She was also interested in modelling, and entered a couple of Miss Black America beauty pageants in her teen years, winning once and thus becoming Miss Brooklyn, then nearly won the Miss New York State pageant.

Upon matriculating in 1971, Bernnadette enrolled at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in drama in 1975.

In 1980, Bernnadette made a guest appearance in the episode “Invisible Maniac/September Song/Peekaboo” of the romantic comedy drama “The Love Boat”. In 1985, she played Marcie in the episode “Married or Not” of the comedy “What’s Happening Now!”, and her following appearance was in the 1987 episode “I Paint What I See” of the comedy “Bustin’ Loose”.

In 1991, Bernnadette was cast to play Carolyn Thompson in the critically acclaimed romantic family comedy “The Cosby Show”. It was created by Michael Leeson, starred Bill Cosby, Phylicia Rashad and Keshia Knight Pulliam, and follows the lives of the members of a wealthy African-American family; the series aired from 1984 to 1992, and won 61 awards, including six Primetime Emmys, while it was nominated for 60 other awards.

The remainder of the ‘90s then saw Bernnadette make a guest appearance in an episode of a couple of series, including the comedy “The Good News”, another comedy “The Wayans Bros.”, and the comedy drama “The Parent ‘Hood”.

Bernnadette had no TV series roles in the 2000s, as she was focused on appearing in movies, so her following role came in 2013, when she played Gwen in the comedy “Whatcha Cookin’”. She has since appeared in two more series: the 2015 pilot of the action crime drama “Base”, and the episodes “Good for Nothing” and “Thy Neighbor’s Strife” of the 2015 comedy “Black Jesus”.

A couple of Bernadette’s following roles were in the thriller drama “Land of the Free?” and the  action “Still ‘Bout It” both in 2004, and the 2006 comedy “The Engagement: My Phamily BBQ 2”. The year 2009 saw her play the main character Usahnisa in the comedy “The Adventures of Umbweki”, directed by Sarah Poindexter, and which also starred Lee Majors and Antonio Fargas. It follows the African tribesman Umbweki who has left his tribe and taken eight years to travel to Hollywood, wanting to become a movie star.

The same year saw Bernnadette play Vera in the drama “Caution! Heartache Ahead”.

Three of her following roles were in the 2010 crime thriller drama “N-Secure”, the 2011 short adventure comedy “Forever Young at Heart”, and the 2012 comedy “Momma & Me”. Bernnadette has since appeared only in the 2016 comedy “No Regrets”, the 2019 comedy “The Big Shot”, and the 2021 short drama “Dreams from the Edge”, while she’s currently shooting for the upcoming movie “Chaaw”.

In January 1979, she married Darnell Johnson, who was at that time the owner of a nightclub in Brooklyn; the date of their divorce remains unknown, but not long after that, Bernnadette married the engineer Terrence Redd – neither the date of their wedding nor of their divorce has been revealed, but they have a daughter together named Dior Ravel, born in April 1982.

Bernnadette then married Kevin Fontana, and it’s widely believed that they have been together for more than 30 years now; they have a daughter together named Brittany Rose, and the family is today living in Atlanta, Georgia.

Bernnadette is a fashionista and a shopaholic, as she’s keeping up with all the latest fashion trends, and goes shopping for clothes several times every week.

She’s passionate about travelling, and her career has taken her to various US states and European countries, while her two favorite places to visit are Paris, France and Miami, Florida.

Bernnadette’s favorite season is summer, as she loves to sun tan at the beach, and swim in the ocean.

She’s a lover of animals, and has had several pet dogs and cats.
