For his high school education, Baker went to Lake Travis High School, and played football for the Cavaliers. In four seasons, he became one of the best in the class, compiling a record of 6,255 passing yards for 67 touchdowns, but also had eight interceptions. He won the 2011 4A State Championship with the team.
Thanks to his successful plays, Baker was ranked as a three-star recruit, and committed to Texas Tech University. He started playing football for the Red Raiders and became the starting quarterback, due to the injury of Michael Brewer, his former teammate at the high school.
