Born in Monticello, Mississippi, Jefferson is the son of Laura Jefferson, who worked as an assistant teacher in Prentiss Elementary School in Prentiss Mississippi, where Al studied and grew up. Meanwhile, his father died due to a work-related accident when he was young.

While attending Prentiss, Jefferson immediately joined the basketball team and did exceptionally well. He also became a finalist for the Naismith Award before graduating. Instead of going to college, Jefferson opted to go straight ahead and play professional basketball. He joined the NBA draft in 2004 and was picked by the Boston Celtics. His entry into the NBA started his professional career and also his net worth.

After playing for four years with the Celtics, in 2007 Jefferson was then traded to Minnesota Timberwolves where he played until 2010. From the Timberwolves, he was again traded to the Utah Jazz where he played from 2010 to 2013, and later on he also played with the Charlotte Hornets from 2013 to 2016. Aside from playing basketball, Jefferson is also big in doing charity. He has participated in various friendly basketball matches to help victims of calamity in his hometown. He is also known to host an annual basketball camp in his hometown every summer partnering with the Boys and Girls Club.
