Born Benjamin Michael Askren on 18 July 1984 under the Cancer zodiac sign, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa USA, he’s the son of Chuck and Michele Askren, and of part-Cuban ancestry, Ben was introduced to wrestling at the early age of six but didn’t consider it seriously up until he was in sixth grade.
He joined the wrestling club, and during his Arrowhead High School years, became a two-time state champion. Following his matriculation, Ben enrolled at the University of Missouri where he continued his wrestling career, fighting for the Missouri Tigers. He had an amazing second half of college, as he won the Dan Hodge Trophy several times, thus becoming only the third athlete ever to achieve such a thing. He finished his college career with a 153-8 record, and a number of awards to his name, including two National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships, and two Big 12 Championships.
Ben competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, but lost out in the quarterfinals to Cuba’s Ivan Fundora, ending his chances of winning a medal. After the Olympics, Ben focused on a career in mixed martial arts, and made his debut on 7 February 2009. He fought Josh Flowers in a match organized by Headhunter Productions at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Center in Columbia, Missouri.
After a successful second match outcome, Ben competed at the 2009 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship, held in Barcelona, Spain from 26-27 September 2009.
He won his first match but lost the second to Pablo Popovitch, who on to win the championship. The same year, Ben won the World Grappling Championship, after defeating Jacob Volkmann.
Ben joined the Bellator Fighting Championships Season 2 Welterweight Tournament, and won it by defeating Ryan Thomas and Dan Hornbuckle on the way to the glory.
His next win was against the Bellator Welterweight Champion Lyman Good, whom he defeated by unanimous decision, and was named the new Bellator Welterweight Champion. He defended his title multiple times in fights against such mixed martial artists as Nick Thompson, Jay Hieron, Douglas Lima, Karl Amoussou and Andrey Koreshkov.
His contract expired in November 2013, after which he was released from the Bellator and became an unrestricted free agent.
His next stop was ONE Championship, with which he signed a two-year/six-fight contract. Ben’s first fight was against Bakhtiyar Abbasov, who was on a nine-fight winning streak. However, Abbasov’s win streak ended on 30 May as Ben defeated him via submission in the first round. After the successful debut, Ben faced the champion, Nobutatsu Suzuki on 29 August 2014, and won the match by a first round TKO. He faced several opponents who challenged him for the ONE Championship Welterweight title, including Luis Santos, Nikolay Aleksakhin, and Shinya Aokibut, but Ben successfully defended it, eventually retiring from ONE Championship on 24 November 2017 as the champion.
Ben next signed a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) under the trade agreement between ONE Championship and UFC. His debut was successful as he defeated Robbie Lawler. However, his second fight was a large blow for him as he lost it to Jorge Masvidal just five seconds into the match, knocked out by Jorge with a flying knee. It was the fastest knockout in UFC history, and more importantly, it ended Ben’s undefeated run.
He lost another fight, this time to ADCC World Champion and MMA veteran Demian Maia, and less than a month later, Ben announced his retirement from the mixed martial arts competition.
