Relationship with Raymond Kroc

Before Jane, Raymond had one failed marriage behind him – he was married to his childhood sweetheart Ethel Fleming for almost 40 years, from 1922 to 1961. Raymond and Jane married just two years after his divorce from Ethel.


Unfortunately, their marriage came to an end just five years after the wedding ceremony in 1968, and since then, there is no news about Jane. The couple didn’t have children together, and didn’t share the reason for their divorce.

Born Raymond Albert Kroc on 5 October 1902, in Oak Park, Illinois USA, he was the son of Czech-American parents Alois ‘Louis’ Kroc and his wife Rose Mary (nee Hrach). His parents moved to the US in the late 1890s, and his father earned a fortune by speculation on land during the 1920s, however, his fortune disappeared with the stock market crash in 1929.

Raymond spent his childhood in Oak Park, and during World War I, he served as a Red Cross ambulance driver at the age of 15, as he lied about his age at the submissions.

However, the war didn’t last long and he had to search for another job. In the aftermath of World War I, Raymond worked as a milkshake mixer salesman for Prince Castle, a foodservice equipment manufacturer. Richard and Maurice McDonald bought eight multi-mixers that he was selling, which impressed him, and made him visit them after the Prince Castle Multi Mixer business plummeted due to lower prices offered by other manufacturers.


He started selling multi-mixers on his own, after obtaining exclusive marketing rights for the product; he was 37 years old at the time, and his business boomed as he was able to sell over 8,000 mixers a year.

However, as the situation was turning for the worse, he started thinking of other options. As a result, he visited his old customers Richard and Maurice McDonald in 1954, and after an initial decline, the brothers agreed to sell the exclusive rights to the McDonald’s method.

At the time, Raymond was 52 years old, already a diabetes patient, and with ongoing arthritis. However, he knew that he couldn’t miss this chance.


His first restaurant opened its doors on 15 April 1955, in Des Plaines, Illinois and before the year ended, he had two more restaurants opened and running with over $235,000 in sales. He used the McDonald’s format and name, and as his business expanded, he founded an independent company that would buy new land or lease it from the owners for new McDonald’s restaurants.

The franchise was making huge steps forward, but the brothers weren’t satisfied with the way he was running the business. He bought out the McDonald’s for $2.7 million from the brothers, but they refused to hand over the main restaurant, located in San Bernardino.


Furious with their decision, Raymond opened a brand-new McDonald’s just a block away from the original restaurant, naming it ‘The Big M’. This quickly forced brothers into the ground and he now had complete freedom to make his changes and run the business as he wanted.

The results were huge, as by the end of 1965 the chain had over 700 restaurants in 44 states. He served as the president of Mcdonald’s until 1968, after which he assumed the Chairman of the Board position until 1977.

He sadly passed away in 1984 at 82 years old, and Raymond was involved with the company up until his death, serving as the Senior Chairman.

At that point, McDonald’s had 7,500 locations in the US, and had already expanded to 31 other countries and territories.

During his life, baseball was one of his major interests, and after he stepped down as the Chairman of the Board, Raymond bought the San Diego Padres, a rather unsuccessful team during his life, but in the year of his death, the club reached the World Series; unfortunately, Raymond failed to see his team in the finals as he died before the first games. He was inducted posthumously as part of the inaugural class of the San Diego Padres Hall of Fame in 1999.


Raymond Kroc’s wealth has been estimated at around $600 million at the time of his death.

He suffered a stroke in 1980, and four years later died of heart failure at a hospital in San Diego, California USA. He was buried at the El Camino Memorial Park in Sorrento Valley, San Diego.

With his first wife Ethel, he had a daughter Marilyn in 1924, but she sadly died in 1973 from complications caused by diabetes. She was buried at Memorial Park Cemetery and Crematorium Skokie in Chicago, Illinois.
