John Franklin Candy was born on 31 October 1950, in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. John was the son of Sidney James Candy and his wife, Evangeline. Raised in a working-class Catholic household, his father passed away at 35 years old from complications of heart disease. At the time, John was only five years old.

He went to Neil McNeil Catholic High School, after which he enrolled at Centennial College to study journalism. However, he transferred to McMaster University, where he started his acting career. Before he considered acting as a profession, John wanted to become a professional football player, but a knee injury prevented him from turning professional.

He started his acting career in theater in 1971, with a small role of a Shriner in the play “Creeps”, about cerebral palsy.
