He had trouble finding friends due to constant moving, but he eventually matriculated from Arlington Heights High School, as the family settled in Fort Worth Texas, where his father was stationed at Carswell Air Force Base.

He started playing guitar at the age of 11, when he received an acoustic guitar from his grandmother, and by the time he was ready for college, John was already performing in several local clubs, under the name John Denver, after the capital of his favorite state in the USA, Colorado. After high school, he enrolled at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, and sang in a folk-music group the Alpine Trio.

He moved to Los Angeles and joined the Chad Mitchell Trio, in which he replaced the very same Chad Mitchell, the founder of the group. The trio changed its line-up several times and ultimately the name to Denver, Boise, and Johnson, consisting of John, David Boise and Michael Johnson. However, this only lasted for a few years before he started pursuing a solo career, and released his debut solo album “Rhymes & Reasons” for RCA Records.
