Who is Akuapem Poloo?

Ghanaian actress Akuapem Poloo was born as Rosemond Alade Brown in Suhum, Ghana, on 1 June 1989, under the zodiac sign of Gemini. She’s appeared in only six movies, and is known best for her portrayal of Waitress in the 2018 romantic comedy “The Honeymoon Trip”, directed by Sunshine Olawore, and which starred Walter Anga, Kingsley Anyanwu and Elizabeth Badasu. It follows a newly married man who’s gone with his wife on a honeymoon, while he’s arranged for his lover to stay at the same hotel; the movie received mostly negative reviews.

Akuapem’s recently attracted a lot of attention, after having been incarcerated for domestic violence, because she uploaded a picture onto the internet which featured her and her son naked together.

Early life and education

Akuapem’s mother Maa Lydia Amponsah and her father raised her as an only child in Ghana; Akuapem’s father’s name remains undisclosed, and some of her fans believe that he wasn’t around while she was growing up. She was nine when she started selling the snack ‘Poloo’ in the streets, which was how she received her nickname.

She began acting in school plays when attending Adonten Senior High School, while she also practiced acting and singing; it’s believed that Akuapem was a cheerleader too, although this hasn’t been confirmed.

She matriculated in 2008, and then enrolled at college, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2012; it remains unknown what Akuapem did for a living in the following six years, prior to launching her acting career.

Career as an actress

Akuapem’s debut film role was her portrayal of Lady in the 2018 comedy “Sidechic Gang”, written and directed by Peter Sedufia, and which starred Aaron Adatsi, Beverly Afaglo and Ricky Adelayitor. It follows three women who’ve decided to make a business out of exposing cheating boyfriends and husbands to their other halves; the film was nominated for a 2018 African Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role (for all three lead actresses).

The following year saw Akuapem appear in the drama “The Inner Woman”, while she also portrayed Sandra in the comedy drama “Away Bus”, written and directed by Kofi Asamoah and Peter Sedufia, and which starred Adjetey Anang, Toosweet Annan and Nadia Antwi. It follows KIKI and BIBI, two sisters who are trying to raise $20,000 in 12 hours, so that they can pay for their dying mother’s surgery.

Akuapem then portrayed one of the main characters in the 2021 drama “Accra Hustlers”, directed by Simon Peacemaker, and which starred Kobby Acheampong, Jackie Appiah and Kwesi Arthur. It tells the story of Accra who’s dreaming of becoming a famous actress, and Ankama who’s working at a pizza place and is dreaming of becoming a film producer.

Most recently, in 2022, Akuapem played a supporting character in the drama “Sweet Lost”, directed by Adu Agyemang, and which starred Aaron Adatsi, Felicia Asamoah and Nana Yaa Asantewaa; the movie follows the life of a woman searching for true love.

Other works

Akuapem hosted the 2018 Intertertiary Excellence Awards, and made a guest appearance at the 2018 Miss Universe Ghana Finale.

She’s also an entrepreneur, having launched her business “Sexy Polo Pure Honey” in 2021; she launched an Instagram account for the business in April 2021, and it’s today followed by more than 50,000 people.

Akuapem’s also launched the non-profit organization Poloos Foundation, which donates useful items to those in need, such as books, clothes and food.

Awards and nominations

She won a Ghana Naija Showbiz Award for Best New Actress in 2020, and a 2021 Celebrity Entrepreneur of the Year Award; she was also nominated for a 2020 Social Media Influencer of the Year Award.

Prison sentence

Sometime in 2020, Akuapem uploaded a picture onto her Instagram account, which featured her naked with her seven years old son; this action was criticized by many famous actors and actresses, as well as by the boy’s father.

Even though Akuapem deleted the picture not long after it was posted, Ghana’s Accra Circuit Court still sentenced her to spend three months behind bars on 14 April 2021; the celebrities who had previously criticized Akuapem still believed that the court’s punishment was rather too harsh. Famous American rapper Cardi B tweeted in Akuapem’s defense, stating that many women nowadays are uploading similar content onto their social media accounts, and that it’s unfair for her son to be without his mother for three months.

Love life and son

Akuapem was in a relationship with a married man while she was attending Adonten Senior High School; she’s explained that he acted as if he were her ‘sugar daddy’, paying for everything that she needed, but that they didn’t sleep together. She left him after having grown tired of being the second woman in his life.

Akuapem gave birth to her son in 2013, aged 20, but the name of the boy’s father remains undisclosed; she hasn’t shared any details concerning the man with the public, and there are several theories about what had happened between Akuapem and her son’s father. Some believe that she only wanted to have a son, and that having someone by her side to help her raise him was never the plan; others have claimed that the man didn’t want to have children, and left Akuapem when she chose not to have an abortion.

Akuapem seems to be unattached as of September 2022, hasn’t married, and has a son.

Akuapem’s been criticized for not having deleted her Instagram account following her sentencing, but she’s still currently followed by over 700,000 people on the social media network, and it numbers more than 1,500 pictures and videos uploaded onto it.

She’s a philanthropist and often works with various charity organizations, while Akuapem’s mostly focused on helping children in need.

She’s taking good care of her physique, and works out at the gym a couple of times every week.

Akuapem loves to twerk – she’s been passionate about dancing since she was seven, and today has two dancing lessons a week.

Akuapem’s favorite actor and actress are Will Smith and Anne Hathaway, while a couple of her favorite films include “King Richard”, “The Pursuit of Happiness”, and “Focus”.
