Wayne spent a lot of his childhood in an orphanage, due to his father leaving the family to his mother to raise three children. He attended and matriculated from Denby High School and then went to serve in the United States Navy. After his service, he returned to study counselling at Wayne State University.
Dyer started to work as a high school guidance counsellor before becoming a professor in St. John’s University. He focused on academics and later established private therapy and published works for his field. He would gain a lot of popularity in his classes due to his approach on motivational speaking and optimism. After the success of his first book “Your Erroneous Zones”, Wayne quit teaching to tour and made appearances all over the country. He also continued his work as a writer, continuously releasing best-selling books which included “The Sky’s the Limit”, ‘Excuses Begone” and “Wishes Fulfilled”. According to him, his influences in his teachings included Abraham Maslow, Saint Francis of Assisi and Lao Tzu.

A lot of viewers believed that PBS was aligning their beliefs to Dyer’s instead of their usual programming. For his personal life, Dyer was married three times firstly to Judy and they had a daughter. He then married Susan Casselman and after that married Marcelene. He and Marcelene had five children, and two stepchildren from her previous marriage. Their marriage lasted 20 years until their separation in 2001. In 2015, at the age of 75, Wayne passed away after a heart attack. He had already been suffering from leukemia which was diagnosed in 2009.
