Flanagan was educated at Henry Hudson Regional High School in Monmouth County, New Jersey, where he met his future long-time friend, the acclaimed filmmaker, actor, comic book writer and comedian Kevin Smith, who hired him to manage his iconic comic book store called Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, in Red Bank, NJ, in 1997, serving as the store’s manager ever since.

His friendship with Smith has brought Flanagan many other opportunities as well. He landed small but memorable appearances in several film projects directed by Smith, in which he uttered his famous line “Tell ‘em, Steve-Dave”, which would later became the title of his popular and award-winning podcast. Such films include Smith’s 1994 debut movie called “Clerks”, in which Flanagan had several parts, and the 1995 romantic comedy “Mallrats”, in which he appeared as Walt ‘Fanboy’ Grover. He reprized his role of Fanboy in Smith’s 1997 romantic comedy-drama “Chasing Amy”, his 1999 fantasy comedy “Dogma”, and his 2001 comedy “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”. Meanwhile, he appeared in the 2000 black comedy thriller film “Vulgar”, directed by his friend Bryan Johnson. He also appeared in the sequel of “Clerks” – the 2006 “Clerks II”. Flanagan’s involvement in the film industry has helped him to gain recognition and to establish a decent net worth.

As a comic book artist, Flanagan has provided the art for several of Smith’s and Johnson’s comic projects. These include his illustrations for Johnson’s 2005 four-issue horror miniseries entitled “Karney”, and his 2007 miniseries “War of the Undead”. He has illustrated Smith’s 2008-2009 three-issue comic book limited series called “Batman: Cacophony” and his 2009-2010 six-issue Batman mini-series entitled “The Widening Gyre”, as well as Johnson’s 2013-2014 comic series “Cryptozoic Man”. Flanagan has also created artwork for local heavy metal and death metal bands, so his illustrations have been another source of his wealth.

In 2010 he began hosting the weekly “Tell ‘Em Steve-Dave!” podcast on the SModcast Podcast Network, along with Smith, Johnson and Brian Quinn. The podcast, recorded at Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash store, has since become very popular, winning two Podcast Awards, one for People’s Choice and the other as Best Comedy, reinforcing Flanagan’s popularity status and increasing his fortune.

Around the same time, he and Smith began working on their reality television show, which premiered in 2012; airing on AMC, it’s entitled “Comic Book Men” and is set at Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash and portrays the world of the neighborhood comic book store and fanboy culture. It is now in its sixth season, and has become extremely popular among worldwide audiences, enabling Flanagan to gain a great amount of popularity and to earn a sizable income.

When it comes to his private life, Flanagan is married to Debra Flanagan, with whom he has two children.
